@Herschel, Obviously you’re considering a new bolty and it would seem that you are leaning toward Savage. Since all such decisions involve trade-offs during comparison, would you provide your rundown of thoughts so far or at end with final results? I would be interested since you are an Engineer and think systematically. Thanks.

It appears all similar Ruger American rifles in the short action calibers use “AI style” magazines. I’m curious if that means the “AI style” magazines used in the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle can be used in the Ruger American?
I guess I’ll have to take a GSR magazine to a gun store selling the Ruger American and test fit it.

“AI-style” magazines and quick release latches that makes the gun look a bit ugly? That’s not intended only for deer….

If I’m not mistaken, the Ruger American (and Savage Axis) only comes in a full length action. That’s fine on a 30-06 or 270, but I think a 308 family short action cartridge loses some of its edge without the right action length.

I agree with Fred. A more detailed rundown of your bolt action thoughts would be interesting for those of us thinking about a new rifle. The Savage Hog Hunter 308, Mossberg MVP 308 Thunder Ranch, and Mossberg Patriot 30-06 stand out as options I’m considering for my next purchase, mainly because they come with iron sights. The Patriot with a walnut stock is the best looking of the 3.

@ Pat, Yes the Ruger GSR magazine is the same magazine used in the American configured for the AI. I’ve already tried it.

@Houston,
Good info. It does appear that all of the Go Wild Camo Ruger American rifles are long action, without regard to caliber. Interesting, to me, is that the .30-06 rifle uses a rotary magazine instead of AI magazine. Too bad that, a magazine that could accept a longer overall length could be beneficial to those that load their own ammo. For example, some 6.5mm bullets are very long and being able to load them well out of the case leaves room for more powder, and can enable positioning the bullet just short of the rifling, a benefit to accuracy.

@Pat,
The AI magazine for the 308 length rounds is a much better magazine than the rotary. I hate their rotary magazine. I have a 5.56 RAR Ranch that is a tack driver. But now I want the Ranch model that takes AR mags and I want the 308 with the AI mags.

The AI magazines for the .308/6.5CM/ and the rest of the .308 based cases all use the same AI magazine. Which means if you have several GSRs or RAR rifles in different calibers, no new magazine types are needed. All are single column, no one makes a larger capacity, but there is a company that makes a magazine extension that adds five rounds to the metal magazines. I bought a few just because. http://www.area419.com/product-category/prc/mags-extensions/
