High Magazine Clips And The Shoulder Thing That Goes Up
BY Herschel Smith12 years ago
Glenn Reynolds links to (what should be) an embarrassing blunder concerning Howard Kurtz discussing a “high magazine clip.” This is reminiscent of Carolyn McCarthy’s blunder that is still a favorite over at reddit/guns.

I remember when Colin Ferguson gunned down Carolyn McCarthy’s husband and son, and a number of others, on the Long Island RR back in 1993.
Did she ever stop to think that if at least one other person on board that train had been armed, the carnage would have been minimized if not eliminated had someone put a bullet in that particular vermin’s head?
No. Of course not. She’s a complete and utter jackass. Either that or a stooge (witting or otherwise) of the left.

Barrel shroud: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrel_shroud
Intended to protect the operator from injury due to a barrel overheated by repeated firing. So I guess the rationale is that if someone is on a spree, a hot barrel would slow him down?

Well, they can wear gloves.

So you’d suggest that anyone shooting a firearms grab it by the barrel instead of the stock? Then I suppose that one could purchase a gas recirc system instead of a DI (direct impingement) system as designed by Eugene Stoner. You want to make gas recirc reloaders illegal too?

RE: Barrel Shroud Heat Issue
There is a technique to deal with hot barrels. All Assistant Gunners in a crew served machine gun crew know it.
You don’t want to let the barrel of the machine gun get too hot. It warps and is no longer effective. So you have to swap it out with the spare barrel. The swapping is the assistant gunners job.
As the barrel is VERY HOT, these guys have modified a set of military issue gloves by cutting off the first half-inch of each finger tip of the glove. Frequently the thumb is not cut off.
This allows them to manipulate small items with their bare finger tips, while protecting their hand from the heat of the barrel as they are removing it, before installing the cool, spare barrel.

having shot a machine gun once or twice in my years wearing cammo, i can only say that anyone grabbing a hot barrel wearing only an regular issue glove will be lucky to keep their hand after being treated for the subsequent burn.
even using the issue barrel change gloves isn’t a whole lot of fun.
standing to the side and being able to watch the bullets travel down the barrel at night because of the temperature variance between them and the barrel is kinda cool, until you realize just how hot that SOB is and you have to yell at the gunner to cease fire.
