Obama can’t destroy “America”, America has never existed. It’s a propositional nation. The United States is no more than a government, that’s all it has ever been.
The south is a nation. We, born and raised here, are southerners. I am a native South Carolinian. Growing up, I never lived outside the south, my father, working for a large national company, refused all assignments outside the south so that my siblings and I remained southerners. It worked.
There are a number of nations with the borders of the United States, some say four, others five. None of them are of particular concern to me, I have little attachment to any of them.
I am a southerner, a South Carolinian by birth. That’s where my citizenship lies, it will be so until my passing.
There is no physical way, other than warfare, that Obama, or any other president, could destroy the south. The US government has been working at that for 150+ years, though one might say it’s been partially successful, we’re still here and we’re not going anywhere.
We want the US government out of our lands. We have always wanted that.
We will have it.

As a fellow South Carolinian, I’ve got to both agree and disagree with you on this. This all remains true once you get up in to the hollers or places like Pumkintown or Sugar Tit or the Mustard Grounds (I’m from the upstate). But we are slowly (and surely) eroding and becoming much less of a common people as Yanks and other urbanites and elitist transplants migrate here for the solid economy and cheap, simple living. They’re bringing their worldviews, philosophies and politics with them. More than I would have reckoned are actually assimilating – this surprised me. But many are not, and we have our own, internal issues with natives like Larry Martin in Pickens.
All that to say, I think most of the south will die, just by 1,000 cuts, not immediately.

As Another PROUD South Carolinian, I feel the need to respond.. I am one of the Yanks forced by economic circumstances to migrate to South Carolina. As lad who grew up in Rural Pennsylvania, My childhood was much like the simple southern childhood Y’all were raised in. As you know, Rural America shares many of the values that makes the South such a desirable place to live. We were raised to Love one another, worship God, Love country, And admire our founding fathers. In Pennsylvania, Upstate New York and many other rural patches of America our votes are drowned out by the Demonrat Commies who run the big cities..
I have been in South Carolina for years, I love our state, the people, and it is without question, My Home.. My wife and I have a saying, Yankee by Birth, Southern By CHOICE.. If need be, I would stand with the South in a Heartbeat, And risk my life and treasure to defend it..

More to Josh’s point below. One would think that the intellectual capital and moral fiber that built the South is still there. The trouble is that the progressives have all but destroyed even that in many parts. A good example would be in the Western part of North Carolina, which is much like upstate S.C., or perhaps West Virginia, which is also like both.
Always proud folk, not of significant means, but handing farms, guns, equipment, and a religious heritage down through generations. Now after a half century of handouts and SNAP? They wait in line for their SNAP checks, many of them, dirt poor, and run to drugs or alcohol for escape. Not all of them, but so many of them are on the government handout lifeline that anything that threatens that would cause quite a stir.
Of course, that’s the way the progressives intended it to work. Inner city, poor mountains of N.C. and S.C.. and W.V. It’s all the same to the progressives. Now contrast that with Jim Anthony’s star-studded lineup of rich folk who gated much of the mountains of S.C., and the transplants that Josh is talking about in Greenville, and you see the problem. The South isn’t what your father fought for. It’s all changed, Pat.

Herschel, both you and Josh have pointed out many of the issues correctly. What we’ve permitted over the years is the insidious schools of education at universities to turn out progressive teachers for nearly 7 decades, maybe more. I’m talking about southern universities, the northern ones were subjected to the tender mercies of Horace Mann’s theories from the 1840s, give or take. Now it’s everywhere and will require harsh methods to remove.
What it will take to have our south back under our control we’ll have to “encourage” those that came here and refused to assimilate to leave us. The types you find within “Ten At the Top” or “Upstate Forever” and a couple of other NGOs simply must leave us.
Last, a bit of nit picking, the western part of South Carolina is properly called the Upcountry, “Upstate” is a product of the accursed Chamber of Commerce which I refuse to use. We have the Lowcountry, the Midlands, and Upcountry. There is, fortunately, an Upcountry Museum in Greenville to remind us of that, although if you go there you’d learn that the Indians and blacks created South Carolina as we know it today, whites being along for the ride.

I have a suggestion, don’t write a check to the IRS this April, thats the fastest way to shut down the Federal Government, CONgress only short changes these agencies, it does not stop them by closing the doors. If this simple suggestion doesn’t grap you, then wait till they come for your guns…

Sorry, there’s a bit more to that question you probably wouldn’t have any background on. Pat recently claimed that he does not obey federal laws, just his state laws. Federal income taxes, of course, are federal laws, so I’m curious to know if Pat was just engaging in a bit of bluster, or if he actually has the gumption to refuse to pay his federal taxes.
He suddenly got a lot quieter on the issue, so I wanted to remind him that the question was still out there.
