So Why Isn’t Someone Talking To Him About Barrel Harmonics?

At this reddit/guns post?
By mounting the light directly on the barrel, he’s adding a secondary harmonic, possibly exacerbating a primary node or creating an anti-node, or creating nodes completely out of sync with other nodes, and fundamentally changing the way the barrel vibrates. Someone needs to tell him to remove the light and figure out another way.

Maybe he is causing a problem….and maybe he isn’t. The proof is in how it shoots. If he can still hit the target at 300 yards the light is NOT A PROBLEM.

If he is shooting at a target 300 yards away, he doesn’t need the light.

It’s ALWAYS a problem to alter your barrel harmonics (which is why, for example, guys who have floated barrels and wood stocks, generally hate to get their stock wet because it absorbs water and takes up the gap between bedding and barrel). Whether he can create a work-around is another issue, but making your barrel less accurate and more unreliable is always a problem.

No kidding. Yet some manufacturers actually make devices to hang stuff from an AR front sight. This photo is proof that someone actually buys that stuff.

If he can hit what he aims at without the light AND with the light then the issue is IRRELEVANT. He may be changing the ‘harmonics’ but if that change does not significantly impact accuracy it DOES NOT MATTER. EACH gun, EACH barrel and EACH accessory is unique. Often there will be problems doing things like this…but NOT ALWAYS. The only way to know is to try it. Whether or not he ‘needs’ the light is a totally different issue from whether or not the mounting method is detrimental or not.
