North Carolina Deputy Shoots Her Daughter While Showing Off Her Gun To Guests
BY Herschel Smith8 years ago
LINCOLNTON, N.C. (WBTV) — An 11-year-old is in stable condition after she was accidentally shot by her mother, a Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy.
Misty Michelle Flowers, a Lincoln County deputy, was reportedly showing her service weapon to guests at her Loop Road home when she accidentally fired the gun. The bullet went through a wall and hit her daughter in the next room, according to reports.
Lincoln deputies said they were called to the home at 11:23 p.m. and started tending to the girl’s injury. The child was taken to CHS-Lincoln and then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. According to deputies, she was in stable condition after surgery.
Flowers, 38, has been with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office since 2015 and worked for the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office before that.
She didn’t accidentally do anything. She negligently placed her finger inside the trigger guard and pulled the trigger.
But remember boys and girls, only a law enforcement officer really knows anything about guns. And only a law enforcement officer can be trusted to carry one on a day to day basis. And only law enforcement offices have been trained in super secret ninja warrior stress management techniques while operating tactically during tactical operations.

So, she was immediately arrested and will have to spend a quarter of million dollars in legal fines, fees, and civil penalties. She will also spend 3 to 5 years in prison for reckless endangerment and attempted manslaughter. Now, being a felon, she will not be able own firearms and won’t be able to support herself and her family because she’ll have to work at burger king the rest of her life. Oh wait, nope.

Maybe a special “booger hook” rule is necessary for LEOs. Seems like Herschel posts one of these per week…

The last time I cleaned the guns, I had my kids (then 11 and 8) help out. Before we got started, we went over the “Four Rules” (again; we do it every time the guns come out). Then we remove ammo from the room, and double- and triple-check every chamber is clear. When it comes time to pull the trigger to disassemble (on those pistols that require it), we make an exaggerated point (heh!) of keeping the muzzle away from people and pets (and because I’ve been under the house, away from water/sewer pipes and electrical conduits). And the whole time, we were also discussing the “kids’ four rules” if they ever find an unattended gun (i.e. the Eddie Eagle rules) and how they relate to the “Four Rules”. (Why are the first two steps “STOP” and “Don’t touch it”? Because of Rules #1 and #2 “Treat all guns as if they are loaded,” and “Keep your finger off the trigger….” You can’t have your finger on the trigger if you’re not touching the gun.)
And good times are had by all.
The gist of all this is, even my then-8-year-old was better trained on real gun safety than the deputy in this story. It’s not that hard.

So she was showing off her gun. Good grief. And the fact that people like this haven’t developed an automatic, subconscious habit of placing their trigger finger clear of the trigger, up on the frame, is evidence of either poor training or so little training time that the habit hasn’t been instilled. Again, it ought to be automatic.
Of course we don’t know exactly what the dumbass was really doing, other than being a dumbass.

Not to mention the other safety rules for firearms handling, of course. All of which she violated.

Yep, the first thing I think of, when I have guests over, is “take out my guns for some show and tell.”

At least the S.O. did the right thing and fired her. Let her go work at Waffle House, since that’s probably the only job she’s really qualified for. They don’t allow guns in their restaurants, so the customers should be safe.

Ha! Safe from former LEOs. Not so safe from crooks (who probably know how to use their guns).
