“Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA — ordinary citizens don’t need guns, as their having guns doesn’t serve the State.”
–Heinrich Himmler
“I have grown up with guns all my life, but people who like assault weapons they should join the United States Army, we have them.”
–Gen. Wesley Clark, US Army
“Anyone who wants to possess such a weapon (“assault weapon”) should join the Marine Corps.”
–Oliver North, President of NRA

“Voting will not get us out of this mess” – unk.
The comments of Oliver ‘Hardy’ North demonstrate that expertly.
I USED to believe in NRA, and do ‘this, that, and every other thing’ they said, and as a Life Member, vote every time and return my ballot (never been to a Member Meeting). But, I stopped. Because, like others, I developed a sincere belief ‘mother NRA’ no longer represents me – if it ever did – and instead is an anti-2A, compromising org whose only interest is in publicity, and lining its own pockets and that of its Executive Director. Maybe NRA is ‘the only game in town’. Except now I’m estranged from them. I won’t vote in their elections; it only encourages them.

I guess I could have added Charlton Heston (former NRA chieftain), “No civilian needs an AK-47.” But it was after all Michael’s comment, not mine.

Thanks, Herschel – I’m honored to be given a CoTW. Please feel free to add “Moses” to the list. Maybe you should have a sticky note on this site with similar quotes from notable statists who advertise as “pro-2A” but have made similarly ridiculous comments such as the above. I’m sure your readers could find some others.

The NRA is either an effective advocate for Second Amendment rights, or a sterling example of controlled opposition in action. I’m betting on the latter, despite their protests to the former.
The late, great philosopher Eric Hoffer was correct when he said, “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.”
The National Rifle Association is clearly well into stage two, if not stage three, of Hoffer’s analysis.
