The Officer Who Waited Outside During The Parkland Shooting Will Get A Pension Of More Than $8,000 Each Month
BY Herschel Smith6 years, 7 months ago
The Broward County Sheriff’s deputy who waited outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as a gunman opened fire on students and teachers, killing 17 people, is being paid more than $8,000 a month from his state pension.
Scot Peterson, who was the school resource officer at the Parkland, Florida, high school, was heavily criticized for taking cover as the massacre unfolded on February, 14. The 55-year-old retired a week after the shooting, explaining that he remained outside school because he didn’t know where the gunfire were coming from.
Radio transmissions from the day of the shooting have since contradicted Peterson’s defense, showing that he not only knew that the shots were coming from inside the freshman building, but that he directed his fellow officers to stay away from that location.
Last month, Peterson received his first monthly pension check of $8,702.35, the Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) confirmed Wednesday morning. That amounts to $104,428.20 annually, which is about $2,550 more than he made during his last year with the department, according to the Sun Sentinel, which first reported his pension payment Tuesday night.
That’s good scratch for doing absolutely nothing, yes? How long do you reckon states will be able to keep that sort of thing up before going bankrupt?
“To protect and serve.” Remember boys and girls, only cops can be trusted with guns.

From the Sun-Sentinal link:
“A state commission is reviewing the police response to the shooting.
Peterson was sued last month by Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow died in the shooting.”
Regardless of his newly minted pension, Peterson’s problems haven’t even started yet.

He’s untouchable by the legal system, as are all cops.

Plaintiff is wasting his money.

Actually, municipalities and cities across the country are already facing hard choices over whether to continue existing levels of local police/fire protection, or to continue to fund lavish pensions being collected by already-retired public employees. Since these local governments cannot, unlike the federal government, monetize their debt – they are caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The retired city employees get the gold mine, the taxpayers get the shaft. Same as it ever was.

State of Illinois is up against the Wall for Pension Funds/Payouts already… the ‘federal (not) (no) reserve bank’ suggested that the State raise Property Taxes by 2-4% (Double the Rate, essentially) in order to JUST hold the Line on Existing Pension Payouts. Socialism in Action, People….
While the ‘failure’ of EBT accounts seems like the Ideal ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ scenario, it will be the Pensions (private as well as .gov) that will likely be the first Domino in Economic Collapse, as (wait for it) the .gov will do ANYTHING to keep their ‘bennies’ flowing. Getting Blood out of a Turnip will be the business model used.
Just Another Reason why (((they))) don’t want any Armed Turnips…

@Georgiaboy,
I have actually [briefly] addressed this for Tampa Bay and Memphis who are dealing with running out of money and having to kill cop pension funds, but I’m not energetic enough to find the post right now.
But yes, the FedGov can monetize debt, states and cities can’t. Oh, to have a printing press that can spit out money, right? It’s the solution to all that ails FedGov.

Exactly, Adam Baum.
If Americans weren’t such lazy pussies they would find that shunning works.
Shun magic blue costumed thugs, magic black robed clowns, politicians, and leftists of all manner. If they couldn’t buy fast food, donuts, clothing, home supplies and if people refused to sit next to them in church, maybe things could begin to turn around.

I wrote a series of columns about ten years ago for a now-defunct website whose name I can’t recall off the top of my head, on the ticking demographic and pension time-bomb. The signs and diagnostic indicators were evident back then, just as they are now.
“But yes, the FedGov can monetize debt, states and cities can’t. Oh, to have a printing press that can spit out money, right? It’s the solution to all that ails Fed.Gov”
Which is worse – not being paid the pension and benefits you were promised, or being paid them in nearly worthless fiat “funny money”? Think of Weimar-era Germany and grocery carts of marks to buy a loaf of bread and you’ll be on the right track.
I have long held the private view that an important inflection point will have been reached, in terms social instability, when those checks stop coming in the mail, or are virtually worthless when they do arrive. There are a lot of former local.gov, state.gov and fed.gov folks who are going to very unhappy when that day comes.
The ancient Chinese proverb (or was it a curse?) applies: “May you live in interesting times…”

Though to shun anybody in a county with 1.5 million residents.
