American Rifleman Tests The CMMG Guard Carbine In .45 ACP
BY Herschel Smith6 years, 4 months ago
The review was positive all around, just like mine of the CMMG PSB .45 ACP.
What I find particularly interesting is that they found that the 16″ barrel supplied a non-trivial additional muzzle velocity compared to pistols.
What I would like to do is get a chronograph and meter velocity with the full length carbine barrel, my CMMG PSB and my 1911s, with standard ball ammunition, PD ammunition, and the faster .450 SMC round.
Alas, that all takes money.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. I had asked if you had chrono’ed your 45PCC back when you took your CMMG to the range.
9mm PCCs offer an increase of 15-20% muzzle velocity with a 16″ barrel over commander/govt length pistols. EG 1100fps 124gr load in pistol yields approx. 1300fps carbine length barrel velocity.
The article states “…accounted for 22.8 percent more velocity…” than gov’t length barrel pistol. So it seems 45PCCs afford as good as, or probably better, velocity benefits than their 9mm brethren.

I read the piece too.
My thought was: Its a short rifle. Why not test 230 grain and even 250 grain bullets?
I think the Mech Tech system is a less expensive way to go, if you’re not a dedicated race gunner with “cool guy” and “cool gear” factored in.

Herschel,
How about these ballistics for one of my handloads in a High-Point 40 S&W carbine with a 17.5″ barrel:
155 gr XTP / 8.4 gr Power Pistol / 1.125″ OAL
34158 psi / 1599 fps / 880 ft-lb / 96.3% Burn / 102.8% Fill
They compare quite favorably with 45 Cal CMMG Guard carbine. High-Points are ugly, but they are cheap and get the job done.
