Retrievable Rappelling Anchor
BY Herschel Smith5 years, 6 months ago
I ran across this a little while back and wanted to embed it. It’s the only way to keep from leaving your rope behind.
I’ve rappelled before and may do so again, but I think I’d want to practice this before trusting it with heights greater than a few feet. If you want to see more, this video also explains it.

Rappeling from ANY height of significance is a skill best practiced and perfected prior to actually needing it. I don’t climb but I have known
quite a few people over the years that do….or did. Not all of them are
still with us…even though they were skilled climbers. It’s a risky activity
for even the most skilled….it’s virtual suicide for the inexperienced.

I had not seen that particular method. I might give that a try next time I practice. Thanks!

35+ years of experience rock climbing/rappelling. The method looks cool, but the last man had better not accidentally pull on the “retrieve” side while on the way down! Might be useful as a last resort in an emergency IMHO. Rappelling ring-$4.95 and 1″ tubular nylon webbing-$.45 per foot from REI Co-op. I’ll opt to leave a few bucks worth of equipment behind, thank you.

Looks like a modified parachute braid. should work but if you put the untie it ropes by accident things would get hairy fast.
