Only 530 Semi-Automatic Guns Have Been Turned In, Say New Zealand Police

New figures show gun owners are holding back on handing in their firearms, because they’re waiting to hear how much the Government will pay for them
Figures released to Newstalk ZB by the New Zealand Police showed that, as of Sunday night, only 530 guns had been handed in since the ban on semi-automatic guns was finalised in early April.
There are around 250,000 licenced firearm holders in New Zealand and it’s estimated as many as 300,000 guns could now be illegal.
I laughed.
So many breathless articles here in America about how easy it was to make new gun control laws, unlike “Cowboy” America.
So much pining away and wishing for such a society by the progressives, so much desire for a state monopoly on violence.
And now, so much fail.

This is a bit Different than the U.S. States that Demanded “Registration” and had very little Compliance, therefor far less ability to ‘Target’ individuals. I would suspect that after one or two instances of Violence while trying to Confiscate a “Registered” Gun and the bureaucracy will try things like Cancelling the Driver’s Licenses of “Registered” Gun Owners.
Given that there is Likely some numbers of “Unregistered” Guns, even in a Small Place like NZ, it will still be Unlikely (((they))) will be able to fully Disarm the People. Now multiply that by 10 Million or so, and that will be America..

Only the Military Style Semi Automatics and Pistols required registration under the previous regulations. This leaves an unknown number of neutered AR’s and other long guns in private hands. While legal possession required a licence and waiver of any right to decline a search of your property, the police still have little to go on outside of social media posts.
Kiwis are quite conditioned to compliance–it remains to be seen what will happen when the money is announced.
The government has announced replacement firefighting equipment expended in the summer’s wildfire has been cancelled to pay for the guns, so there are still problems with the “plan”, and folks might still decide they aren’t being paid enough to play along.
