Trump Endorses Universal Background Checks
BY Herschel Smith5 years, 3 months ago
That thing we fought so hard for, the hard won victory that required throwing Eric Cantor out of office, is going to come to pass. The republicans are all on the band wagon now and Trump is pushing for it.
President Donald Trump endorsed an expansion of background checks for U.S. gun buyers following the massacres in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, but said there’s “no political appetite” to renew a ban on military-style rifles.
“I’m looking to do background checks,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House on Wednesday to visit the two violence-stricken cities. “I think background checks are important.”
While he said there’s not enough support in Congress to re-enact what was commonly known as the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004, he indicated he would discuss the idea with lawmakers. “I will certainly bring that up,” he said.
Remember those words: “I will certainly bring that up.”
So now Trump has ensured that he is a one-term president. Between the bump stock ban, red flag laws, and universal background checks, he has alienated millions of gun owners.
Other pretend-conservatives have jumped on the band wagon as well. David French has never failed to disappoint me.
A so-called “red flag” law fills the gaps in criminal law and the laws governing mental-health adjudications by granting standing to a defined, limited universe of people to seek temporary seizure orders — called gun-violence-restraining orders — for a gun if they can present admissible evidence that the gun’s owner is exhibiting threatening behavior.
Properly drafted, these laws can save lives while also protecting individual liberty. Improperly drafted, they grant the state an overly broad tool that can be systematically abused to deprive disfavored citizens of a fundamental constitutional right.
He then lists a number of things he pretends will ensure against the improper use of this tool. It doesn’t matter.
French calls himself a Christian. I will make no claim whether he is or isn’t. But I will certainly make the claim that he is an ignorant Christian if he is one at all. He has bought into the wizardry and community witchcraft of psychiatry. He may as well advocate howling at the moon at midnight on a full moon and throwing chicken bones over his shoulder.
Some Christian.

Sadly, I’ve come to expect that nearly all politicians (there is an occasional rare exception) are more than willing to stab gun owners in the back when it suits their needs.
Very few have the backbone to tell the public-at-large: “Nope, I will not compromise a fundamental right, no matter how much you scream and holler.”

I’m beginning to wonder if he actually wants to be reelected next year. In any case, doing this will almost certainly guarantee a communist will be our next president. Better practice saying “President Kamla Harris”.

French is a couple of things.
He’s the Left’s attack dog who goes after anyone who is “too far right” – which is anyone who doesn’t believe in the Left’s dogma and willingly rolls over at their command.
He’s also a complete jackass who announced that he has an AR-15 for home protection AND believes in the red flag laws. So undoubtedly he’ll be facing a Judge sooner or later to beg for his Constitutional rights.

That MSN quote on “assault weapons” is even more damning that what Breitbart published; Trump has completely abandoned his RKBA promises. And the NRA is in no shape to make much of that. As I noted before, we may be seeing the consequences of Wayne’s purging of Chris Cox.
Seems unlikely after Tulsi Gabbard eviscerated her in the last debate on law and order issues WRT to blacks, but its way too early to tell.

@Michael (from Utah) – A leader would say something along those lines. A politician simply sticks his finger in the air to see which way to vote, as Trump is doing now with his “not enough political will for an assault weapons ban” comment. I don’t believe I have ever seen or heard a politician say anything resembling that. They are as bad as (or worse than) the infantile plebes that they ostensibly represent.

What is the position of the NRA?
President Trump does not pretend to be a firearms expert. He relies on experts to advise him. And the NRA told him a bump stock ban was fine. Wanna bet what they’re telling him now???

What I want to do is speculate about bear behaviors and be left free to determine how I would order my affairs. But instead, I have to write my ridiculously boot licking governor, Bill Lee, today because he said; “not yet” about Red Flag laws.
How could it be that I’ll have to explain to a grown man who claims to be Christian that guns have no voodoo, that psychiatry isn’t science, that government assuming to know the heart of a man is idolatry of the first order making itself as equal to God, and that the root cause IS SIN due to a general and national lack of adherence to God’s Law, and that the way to solve it is holy righteous indignation toward all sin and toward every outward sinner by God’s men?
Look, if you’re not drawn, yay compelled, by our LORD to study to show yourself approved of God, and to do the will the Father by following Christ’s commands then you just might be a fake Christian, including you Bill Lee. Seriously, what kind of an example are you, Sir? This IS about God, this IS about sin, do you believe it or not?
What did Jehoshaphat do? He sent God’s prophets to teach the Law to every city, town, and hamlet which caused the people to recognize their sin and repent of God for the path that they had CHOSEN. He didn’t crack down on people minding their own business. You could start by ordering the schools to teach from the Holy Bible as primary text and when the teachers complain and the federals show up kick them off the property. And when parents withdrawal their children send men of God to every house to show them how they and their household can be saved.
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
Why should a man care if he gets arrested or jailed or beheaded or boiled in oil, or more than likely why do you care what the oh so pompous intelligentsia in DC think of you? Look at what’s at stake. How can a man be made free, government or Holy God?
PS. If anybody has children in government schools you need to get them out. They are free fire kill zones. Do whatever it takes, make the sacrifice of yourself to God and not of your children to a putridly wretched and wicked state that can not save you.

@H,
I can not tolerate people claiming that the departure of Christ Cox, a man I’ve met, is increasing the chances of Red Flag laws. Here’s the video of NRA chief lobbyist Chris Cox endorsing Red Flag Gun Confiscation Orders months before his departure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m14GPQlTogo
Oops, it’s been removed. What a surprise.
But the stories about the video abound on the internet. Chris Cox called for federal funding to the states to raid YOUR HOUSE and red flag YOU. You can not rightly circle back and absolve Cox and pretend that Wayne La Pew didn’t know about this. Cox stated what he stated as the head of the ILA in an official and slickly produced vid while as a chief representative of the NRA.
Few things aggravate me more than an NRA operative trying to Delphi gun owners. Is this what you are?

Then I guess it’s a good thing the topic of this discussion is Trump’s comprehensive betrayal on all the current top RKBA issues. As the title puts it, endorsing universal background checks, in the text openly wishing for and saying he’ll push an “assault weapons” ban (his position before he ran for President), neither of which are NRA positions last time I checked. The Clinton AW ban was the first gun control measure the NRA ever totally opposed instead of finding a “compromise”.
I’d say I don’t think they’ve changed their position on this, but who knows what their positions are now. We suspect William Brewer has Wayne’s ear, and Brewer shows every sign of being a dedicated gun grabber. But it’s still the case that there’s a difference between the known entity Chris Cox contacting the White House and legislators, vs. “Hello, my name is [one you’ve never heard of] from the NRA ILA, and….” Does anyone sense anyone is able to and trying to pull Trump back from the brink?

While the sourcing of a lot of this article linked by Drudge and highlighted by the WRSA blog is suspect, it’s consistent with what we’re hearing from Trump’s mouth and what we’ve learned about him. A few key graphs:

“Prewritten” emails, if they’re that, with boilerplate language accomplish very little if anything, especially with the ability of bots to bombard mailboxes. A letter of any sort with a huge list of names is probably also going to the circular file, that sort of thing can also be Astroturfed.
Snail mail was perhaps very good before the post-9/11 anthrax attacks, now they’re at best delayed. And as David Codrea has been pointing out, the GOA is wasting everyone’s time and energy advocating communications with hopeless gun grabbing Congresscritters.
If you want the best chance to have your communication translated into a check mark on our side of the tally, which is the best that can happen, make a phone call to your Congresscritters’ office from something that’ll transmit an area code from their district or state. Sometimes, or at least this has happened with me once, a small discussion will ensue if the critter and his staff aren’t very familiar with the issue in question.

David Codrea should shut up about GOA until he is no longer “wasting everyone’s time” with his love affair with Oathkeepers.

June J: I haven’t seen any evidence of an inappropriate “love affair” with Oathkeepers, and I’ve been following Codrea’s blog since January 2016 according to my backups.
He hasn’t favored them in any way for a long time, or cops in general (he’s about where Herschel is on them, but links to a lot more of their misdeeds because he’s a link blogger), although as I recall he was once a fan before they showed their true colors. Are you taking the position that when someone makes an honest mistake, no subsequent changing of their mind based on new evidence can redeem them?
And that has nothing to do with the point he makes, which I would think would be self-evident, but clearly is not.

Mick Mulvaney is a swamp creature. I have communicated with him directly as one in his district when he was a rep is SC. He has drunk of the tainted wine of political power and even as a “Christian” refers to Romans 13 as proof Christians are to obey gubmint – regardless how tyrannical.
He is for law enforcement for the little people but did zero (literally) to enforce law against protected and favored corporate interests as director CFPB.
As Herschel says, the South is lost and I lament its slide into worship of the state and the fellatio of LEOs.
