For Those Of You Who Have AR500 Plates

I just can’t see .243 as an effective deer rifle because of its high velocity (penetration without deposition of energy), but I guess some guys swear by it.

.243 works for the Southeast’s smaller deer. Works well. So my hunter friends in Florida say.
Against the Northeast’s or West’s larger deer? Don’t know.
My dad swore on .270 for deer in New Mexico and Arizona.

Okay, noted. At 12 yards.
I’d have liked to see at 100Y, and 200Y.
Not to mention after the plate’s been dunked in truck bedliner to cover both sides, and cut down on splatter.
Just saying.

Saw a 243 fail miserably on a large mule deer buck. It was a while back with a cup and core bullet. Shooter changed to 30-06 and never another problem.

I never had a problem with my Rem 788 243. I used Nosler Partition 100gr (well I think they were about 100- old memory) and IMR 4350. Now free roaming (not game ranch controlled and over fed) Texas deer are mostly smaller, but a Red deer I took dropped like a stone. He was a big boy. Those have escaped from the game ranches and are breeding. Grandson took his first whitetail with the 788. I am passing my hunting rifles down to the grandson when he gets old enough to really understand what these rifles mean. I hope his future sons/grandson/s will get their first deer with it.

Good results with 243 here – mid-sized whitetails. 80-85 grn Hornady GMX or Barnes TTX handloads. Accurate, mild recoil in a light rifle, effective for broadside lung and neck shots. Kids like it too.

My girls both shoot 243, and have dropped all of their deer with one shot. Chest cavity shots, mostly. I have been shooting 180 gr 30-06 for almost 40 years, and I swear by it. But I’ll tell ya, I’ve been pretty impressed by how hard the little 243 hammers Adirondack Whitetails. The oldest took a good sized 8 point, that dressed out at 180 lbs. So it wasn’t some yearling doe. They both use Winchester 100 gr Super X Power Point.
