Can The Government Just Close My Favorite Bar?
BY Herschel Smith4 years, 9 months ago
I regret to inform you that we have always lived in a country in which political officials can order private businesses closed.
[ … ]
This general background of police powers underwrites myriad routine restrictions that state and local governments put on social life. It is what allows local governments to authorize health inspectors to examine the kitchens of restaurants and order them to close if they discover problems. It is what allows fire marshals to limit the number of people who can occupy a public venue. It is what allows police officers to arrest people for urinating in the street. It is what allows government officials to prevent you from just accumulating mounds of garbage in the backyard of your suburban home. It is what allows government officials to tell you that you cannot keep a Bengal tiger as a pet in your house.
This case is extremely unconvincing. Public laws against urinating in the streets or letting trash build up IS NOT THE SAME THING as a public curfew. Nor is it the same thing as shutting down businesses.

Digging around, I found that some businesses were restricted or closed for the 1918 Flu. Of course, Wilson was doing a big power grab at the time, but this has been going on a long time. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25851723/washington-dc-is-hit-with-spanish-flu/

You knew this was coming. It’s still hard to believe it when it happens. Nobody, no country has ever believed that it was happening to them until it was too late. The government is shutting down small businesses and banning public gatherings. It’s almost as if they are communists taking over the means of production. But, but, muh freedum, muh trump wouldn’t do that.
They never do fight back and neither will you, you still won’t fight back.

Fred, I’ll pick and choose my battles and fight to my last breath if the time comes.
I’ll let this play out for a time and see what happens.
Don’t see why you are constantly urging battle when caution seems the prudent action for now.

Shutting down businesses such as bars and restaurants is of course
completely unconstitutional. So what. At least HALF if not much
more of what government does is blatantly unconstitutional. To
the typical politician the Constitution and our Rights are AT BEST
a curiosity and for the most part an annoyance to be ignored. And
don’t expect ANY relief from the black robed pirates of the judiciary.
They are even MORE corrupt and evil than the typical politician.
Many of them, especially at the Federal level where Constitutional law
is argued are appointed FOR LIFE. And they simply DO NOT CARE what
we sheep think or believe.

Each business is actually a corporation created by the government. You get a license from the government for your corporation. That’s how the government can do whatever it wants willy-nilly, and we’ll see in court later on, maybe. Churches are the exact same, thus FEMA Clergy Response Teams.

Talking with the owner of my gym last night during my final workout. He has no idea how long he’ll be closed, if he still has to pay rent, loan, insurance, utilities. taxes…
People asked him if he’ll be freezing the membership payments. His answer – “if I do, there won’t be a gym here when this is over.”

@Me, There are lots of ways to “battle”. Mass defiance would be something, but Americans are just too fat and stupid to fight back. They will get on the rail cars under their own power. Danger and Opportunity abound in crisis. Caution is NOT how men known of God should proceed. Ask God to show you the avenue to that opportunity. It’s there. Hint: teams of people, for whatever purpose, but teams.
@All, And Red Flag laws; they ARE taking the powder and guns. You will do nothing.
It’s totally bazaar, there must be a word for it. This refusing to accept what is happening right in front of you and willfully suspending the knowledge of reality to seek the comfort of whatever little hope there is that it isn’t real, that it can’t happen to you, that they wouldn’t do this to us, that it isn’t happening. Solzhenitsyn tried to warn us but we just won’t listen because evil couldn’t really be THAT evil, not to me, I’m a good guy, it can’t happen to me, could it?
We are about to witness every terrible act of tyranny, and nobody will do one single thing about it.
I was called “selfish” by those supposed freedom fighters and hard core right because the church I go to will not forsake the assembling together. Not assembling together in the face of virus or any other thing is the willful rejection of God as sovereign and Holy and Almighty. I stand on all scriptural authority when I say; DEFY YOUR GOVERNMENTS, especially as to every activity ordained of God.
God has the power to save us from a deadly microbe, but even if he doesn’t, NO Nebuchadnezzar, we will not bow down.
Americans know not the God of the Holy Bible, so they misapprehend the very nature of everything that goes on around them. Maybe evil will leave you alone if you just pretend that everything will be alright, if you just give it a little piece of your soul, if you just defy God a little bit, maybe evil will go away and not come back. How foolish a man.

Here in Columbia, Mayor Benjamin has promulgated a curfew from 11 pm to 6 am, beginning tonight. Even as a public health graduate, I see no reason for this. It is one thing if you have civil unrest. As far as epidemic control, it serves no purpose. We do not have civil unrest – yet. All I can attribute it to is the Mayor grandstanding because he has larger aspirations. He is already challenging SC state law with his various illegal gun “ordinances.”
