The moral of the story is that bird shot may be okay for very short range, but is certainly not viable for longer range self defense applications.

Who hasn’t been in a crowded dove field on opening day and been showered with falling #8’s from across a 100 yard flight path? Doesn’t even sting, so no birdshot – go with something heavier that’ll at least break the skin.

On the other hand, what about cut shells? It wouldn’t be my first, second or third choice but if I was stuck where all I had left was bird shot and not much time a cut shell would be better than a straight bird shot shell.
If all I had was lead bird shot and I did have time, I’d open the crimps, pour out the shot and melt it down and cast it into buck shot or slugs and then reload it into the shells.

Bird shot looked quite good in this video. As an indoor home defense it’d do the job. People at extended ranges would be fairly safe. Or am I reading that wrong?
