@Matt,
YMMV.
I carry PD ammo around dangerous two-legged critters. I just don’t like the idea of PD ammo in lighter loads (like 185 g.).

@ Herschel: 230 grain +P in my 1911. The bullet cavity could double as an ashtray.

Herschel knows. “Si vis pacem, para bellum.” And the parabellum is not in 9mm.

Load up the pelvic girdle, caliber won’t mean much.

“Load up the pelvic girdle.” Jack, you are spot on, lots of juicy body parts, Aorta, Femoral Arch, Femoral Arteries, bladder (think sepsis) Lower part of the small intestines, large intestines (again, think rampart sepsis) No sex life if it survives and a lot of other small to medium sized arteries. Cap off one in the knee(s), cripple it for life if again it survives.

Heads and hips, heads and hips… that’s the remedy for hostiles wearing body armor, or just any foe too stubborn to take the hint and go down. The pelvic girdle is essential for upright locomotion in the human, and placing fire upon it is all-but-guaranteed to take down even the most-determined foe. It is also, medically-speaking, one of the worst areas to treat trauma, at least for the first-responder. At once highly-vascular yet tough to access, hip wounds are a challenge for the caregiver, no question about it.
Regarding 230-grain .45 ACP, recall that this is a cartridge invented because during the Philippine Insurrection of 1899-1902, our existing side-arms/loads were not stopping fanatical Moro tribesmen coming out of the bush suddenly, with violence on their minds, jihad in their hearts and swords in their hands. Loaded with full-metal jacket (hard-ball), .45 ACP is the most-effective of the common handgun rounds. The performance gap closes considerably if HP/expanding loads are used, but then as now, those remain illegal under the rules of land warfare.
So, if you need some instantaneous attitude adjustment for the bad guys, you can do a lot worse than John Browning’s masterpiece M1911 and the cartridge that it fires. Potent medicine, for sure. Puts ’em down, keeps ’em down.
