This video is very interesting. It’s also know, apparently, as a chuckmuck. Making char cloth is a skill useful for outdoor survival.

This is a cool vid. Never saw this technique before. He said it was cheating to use a lighter to make the char. Do you carry a blank steel and then make a knife in the field? No. If it’s not cheating to have a knife it’s not cheating to have a lighter.
Hey, when going deep into the bush always carry multiple fire starters. But if weight is a consideration, test your flint with your blade, you may not need a second steel source such as a rod.
But, why complicate things? Also carry a Bic Lighter in your pocket as a primary source of flame. The exact Bic brand lighter he was using is part of my EDC pocket dump. They just work. Don’t over complicate things.
When I was around 12 or so, I found a grey one of these Bic lighters in a puddle in a field near where I grew up. I picked it up out of the water and one flick, fire! I’ve had one in my pocket every day since. Blue is a good color for year round. If you drop it, in pretty much any climate zone or season it’s easy to see even in leaf clutter.
