Birthday Of Eugene Stoner

November 22, 1922, is the birthday of Eugene Stoner. Readers know we say the name of Eugene Stoner only in hushed reverence here on these pages. What better way to remember him than to listen directly to him, and listen to his friends weigh in.

I just had a tet a tet with someone over the AK vs AR, but not intentionally. I posed the question of “why are you recommending folks acquire an AK instead of an AR” for their self defense and survival rifle? I stated the AR, which is the de facto standard self defense rifle in the US, is cheaper, lighter, modular, more accurate, and doesn’t have that ridiculous reciprocating charging handle. I also pointed out that while I could afford either rifle, I own NO AK type rifles and have no plans to acquire one.
He immediately launched that his tours of duty in combat zones gave him superior knowledge of both rifles and he, based on that experience, considered the AK the superior rifle. At that point I ceased posting about it because I realized I was calling someone’s religion into question.
Sadly, he continues to tell people to acquire an AK for their survival and self defense rifle, which is just plain wrong.

I always thought his AR-18 was his attempt to fix all the flaws with the original M-16. The SA-80 they talked about was an offspring of the AR-18, not the 15 (just like the G36 and every other short-stroke piston rifle).
