Soldiering via the police. Let me see your papers! Where has that expression been used before?
As we are driving to our hotel in DC there are police checking papers and hotel registrations.
If you don’t have papers, they won’t let you through the check points. pic.twitter.com/qWs8umOIWc

I was on the troop train that went to Berlin in 1976. The East German government would not allowed the train to travel through East Germany in the daytime so you had to board the train in Frankfurt at sunset and travel at night.
The East German military boarded the train around midnight, rousting everone from their sleep and demanding “Papers please”. It goes without saying that they picked the biggest, meanest and ugliest of the bunch to try to intimidate young American soldiers and airmen.
I know, i was there.
