Jack Hinson’s One Man War

This is an interesting bit of history of which I was unaware.
The union troops acted in a savage manner, and the officers gave immoral commands. On the other hand, Mr. Hinson certainly lived a dark and sad existence for much of his life.
But he was certainly an interesting and capable man, able to live long times in isolation.

I cannot imagine the intensity of feeling of people on both sides of the war during that period in our history. As for the rifle, it must have packed a wallop. Reading “Killer Angels” a few years ago deeply affected my understanding of the war and the motivations of the soldiers who faught it.

I recommend “What This Cruel War Was Over: Soldiers, Slavery, and the Civil War” by historian Chandra Manning.
One of her arguments is that the second great awakening had a strong influence in the north, in particular New England, and a manifestation of that was the belief that the American “union” was uniquely established by God (exceptional) and hence attempts to end the union were viewed as actions against God’s plan.
