How Winchester Model 86 Overpowers M73 44-40

Ron Spomer gives us a lot of history in the lever action that I didn’t know, besides always being an interesting firearms scholar and historian.

Excellent video. I concur.
Started handloading and casting for 45-70 in 1977. Still using my Lyman #457124 385 gr. mold. My first 45-70 was (still is) and original Trapdoor rifle. I bought my Browning (Miroku) Model 1886 in–1986. And yeah, heavier loads will remind you of that crescent steel butt plate.
I have never shot the load he used, and was at first surprised by it’s lack of penetration. In retrospect, that’s about what you would expect from a 300 gr hollow point. A heavier cast round nose would certainly penetrate more.
I would go all weak kneed if I stumbled across a nice Winchester ’92 in 44-40.

I’d have thoroughly enjoyed loading for .45-70, compared to the 44 WCF. Loading for 44 WCF was interesting (and a bit of a pain) because of the case mouth area where it starts to thin up. No problem in the Uberti sixgun but like most I had to tune the ejector spring because 92’s will notoriously beat the tar out of that case and, well, if you’d like to use them again… But full gusto levering is the way to run them. No pussy-footing about it, pretend you’re John Wayne. I did take 2 deer with the thing so, within its limits, it will do that also if the hunter does his part. (Rossi’s 92 iteration, by the way, good gun.)
I’d bet a good hard cast bullet from Beartooth (they still around?) or similar outfit would be sweet in a .45-70.
