How to Build the Ultimate Range Bag

Yea, if you pop my range bag open you’ll find a $4000 Wilson Combat pistol.
No, not really. You’ll find lots of tools, including hex-head wrenches of all sizes, rags (both clean and dirty), clothespins, oil, cleaning supplies, bore/barrel mops, patches, hearing protection of all kinds, loose rounds, spent cases, sand and dirt, dead bugs, towels, uncleaned lead powder, maybe a scope or a scope mount, etc., etc., and probably no replacement batteries for hearing protection or scopes.
All thrown in together in the most unorganized way possible. In a different world – but certainly feasible in terms of possible world metaphysics if I was just more disciplined – it would be clean, organized, fully stocked with everything, and able to be used by anyone.
It’s not any of those things. It is what it is, and we are who we are. If I didn’t have a day job I could do a lot of other things.

I used a gym bag piled full of stuff for several years. A few months ago, after quite a bit of shopping and planning, I bought a dedicated range bag and an assortment of add-on pouches and carriers. It really has been a pleasure to use and, as long as I stay disciplined and return things to their homes, it stays relatively clean and organized. The gym bag is relegated to tools, targets, etc.

Herschel, all I can say, is, if we ever go shooting together, we best mark our range bags so we don’t unintentionally mix them up.

Haha – safe bet that no one who reads this blog finds soy in their range bag…

The shooting day trip is involved but has worked out fairly well since it was a spur of the moment thing. Since I shoot different things at different times I got the Rigid stackable tool box set with the wheels. Drilled into the sides and added french cleats to attach two cheap rifle cases. One on each side.
Bottom box – French Cleats on each side to attach rifle cases. One on each side. Has the generic stuff. Targets, staple gun, duct tape, safety gear, basic tools, extra Ears and Eyes, etc…. Also put ammo here if it is smaller amounts (<300 rounds). So I avoid liquids in this one.
Middle box – more involved Tools and cleaning gear since it is more like a traditional toolbox in design. ANd a second for alternate configuration or tools depending on the trip
Top box – Added latches for the rifle cases to hold the tops. inside, foam to hold 5 pistols and room on each side for misc items. I bought several of these to swap them out with different configurations.
The two rifle cases attached and a 1 inch PVC pipe strapped to it for a single piece cleaning rod(s).
All on the big wheels so it can handle gravel, dirt, etc.
Still looking for a good solution for a smaller range bag for shorter trips. I usually end up just using one of the individual boxes. Usually one of the top ones since I keep personal ear and eye pro here.
Still a work in progress and often is just as messy and chaotic as everyone else, just more space to make things messier.
Just got sick of getting out to shoot and forgetting things.

So, I click on the link to come to this page, which is titled “How To Build The Ultimate Range Bag”, and I see spent cases, sand, dead bugs, and such, all “thrown in together in the most unorganized way possible”.

No, that isn’t what you see.
You see a link to another article entitled that which you can read at your utter delight.
Then you see my commentary that essentially says, “Yea, I have a day job. This is written for perfect people. I’m not that.”
