Making the M1917 Bolt-Action Rifle

I could have done with some narration and without the music, but it’s still an interesting video.

Denmark is a small nation whose population does not even surpass that of the City of New York, but the Danish crown maintains sovereignty over a sizeable portion of Greenland, including its wilderness areas and national parks. These vast regions are patrolled by an elite unit of the Danish Navy called the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, or simply for short, the Sirius Patrol.
Sirius Patrol members are a combination of elite special operations soldier, park ranger and pararescueman/paramedic. The selection process rivals that of any of the world’s top-tier special operations units, and all men selected must be at the peak of physical and mental fitness. Each must be accustomed to working alone or in pairs for months at a time, since LRRPs often go out for 2-3 months. All must be experts at wilderness survival.
How does the Patrol arm itself? With the Model 1917 rifle, 30-06 caliber – the very same vintage weapon covered in the video above. These surplus weapons, all of which are significantly older than any of the men carrying them, have been in use for decades and show no sign of slowing down. They are favored for their ruggedness, reliability under harsh conditions, accuracy and simplicity. Paired with “black-tipped” 30-06 armor-piercing ammunition, they make for potent polar bear medicine.
Remington, Winchester and Eddystone started making M1917 rifles 104-years ago, and if these Danish rifles are any indication, they knew how to make things to last. Just because something is old, doesn’t mean that it won’t function. They’re call “oldies but goodies” for a reason, right?

The M1917 certainly did did well in Alvin York’s hands.

That is a gem; thank you for sharing. Quelle horreur! at the lack of PPE and OSHA inspectors. What a fun prequel to the later attributed Yamamoto quip.

I used to look down on the US 1917 for many a moon for no apparent reason. Dime a dozen and ugly as sin.
But one day at my favorite haunt I found an orphaned 1917 with a sporter stock and B-Square mount/K-Mart Scope for $125 OTD.
Well everybody deserves a loving home and when she shot a clover leaf with old surplus ammo at 50 yards on our first date that’s when the love affair started.

I guess you better fix the problem.
