“Follow Me”

BY Herschel Smith

You are doubtless all aware of the courage on display by Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller.  I embedded the video.  There is a follow up to this, but before we get there I should mention a few things.

First, as to the individual he mentions in the video who questioned his honor.  My first impression was “What sort of prick would do that?”  It was answered in the video.  Lt. Col. Scheller was very respectful, but it appears that it’s some staff officer still bitching about race relations.

If you’re a staff or flag officer bitching about race relations, listen up.  What you should have been doing is getting on your knees every night and begging God for mercy – mercy on you, and mercy on your Marines.  You should be praying nightly that you are an inspiration to them, that you are faithful to your wife (unlike some of the drama queens in the flag ranks recently), that God helps you to meet His demands for leadership, for the spiritual and physical well-being of your boys, and that they would return home safely after accomplishing your mission.  And just like Stu Scheller, you should be questioning your command structure for accountability.

If you cannot do that, resign, today.  I would do everything in my power to keep my son from following a man who is bitching about race relations in the military (or anywhere else), and I don’t consider that individual any man at all.  You can tell him that a Marine father said these words.  I stand by them, and I would meet him face to face and tell him he’s no man at all. What – you didn’t think the Marine Corps makes Marines, did you? Marines are made at home. They’re just refined in the Corps.

Speaking of which, I reminded my son a couple of days ago as we watched the debacle unfold in Kabul that I talked him out of reenlisting in the Marine Corps by saying to him, “If you reenlist, chances are that you will lose your legs or arms or hearing or brain function in some forgotten mission that some corrupt CiC sent you on, and then forgotten by the VA and ignored and disrespected by the rest of the world.”

He told me a few days ago he appreciated my words.  But if he was still in the Marine Corps, I would be proud and honored for him to serve under Stuart Scheller.

Finally, a true leader doesn’t say “go.”  A true leader says “follow me.”

Take pride in being the father of a Marine. I know you do – and you should. No boy becomes a man without someone to show him how, whether that’s a father as in your case, an older brother, a coach, a teacher, foreman or boss at work or perhaps even some crusty old drill sergeant.

See, that’s the great truth about manhood we’re forgotten in this country over the last fifty or so years. Whereas, thanks to puberty and the biological maturation process, girls more-or-less become women automatically, boys do not automatically become men, even though they may pass through puberty. Boys need the guidance of men in order to become men themselves.

You’ll notice that I said “men” and not “women” or “mothers”…. that was intentional, and here’s why: There are many single moms doing their very best to raise sons alone, and my hat is off to them for trying to do that difficult job by themselves. Years ago, when I was a chemistry teacher, I met a few of them. But the cold hard facts are that even these heroic women often fail to get the job done. Why? Because boys need men to become men themselves.

The armed forces are downstream of the family and of culture at large. If family life and culture-at-large deteriorate, as they have in this country over the last half-century, then the quality of the raw material available to the Army and Marines and the rest is going to suffer, too, no two ways about it.

For what it is worth, I’m the son of a U.S.Navy veteran of the Second World War, so thanks to that connection, I have always had a soft spot for the Navy and the Corps. When 9-11-2001 happened, I tried to join up as a navy corpsman, with the intention of “going green” and becoming a Fleet Marine Force HM (I was already overage to join the Marines). However, it was not to be. I was a year past the age cutoff, and despite having healthcare/medical training as a civilian medic and still being able to PT with the young cats, I was not able to get a waiver. I still regret not getting because of the fact that I am a good medic and could have saved some guys, helped them, but on the other hand, seeing what a debacle the ‘Stan became, maybe it is for the best. I know my wife was secretly relieved….

But anyway, please pass along my thanks to your son for a job well-done. And while you are at it, reach around and pat yourself on the back, too. Obviously, you did something right….

Update on LtCol Scheller situation: USMC says tonight they’re “taking appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of LtCol Scheller and his family” indicating concern over his mental health…

So that’s how this is going down.

An army selects for robust men because in conflict, robust men are generally more successful. Bear in mind throughout this that “men provide muscle mass and DNA; women create civilization”. That last is, however, only part of the equation. While women create civilization, only men can create men, and only robust men can create robust men.

@Chris, same thought. No judgement on this guy, but that plenty of people have said follow me and turned out to be either weak goobers or corrupt.

And yes, mental “health” was a favorite of both Nazis and commies. Going after family “safety” is another favorite.

He called on mil and blue collar to be honorable… I think…since he gave no other specifics. But truly, honor and ethics are just something the godless use to justify their sin. The only moral code worth having is that given by the one true God, the God of the bible. BUT, even that won’t help you absent first entering into a personal relationship with Him.

Hundreds of thousands, maybe a million communications are going to come at him from all quarters. I wonder how many will tell him the simple truth of atonement through Jesus Christ. In post Christian America, maybe none.

Honor, morality, and ethics alone are what got us here.

My good fellow, I am stunned that a man of your obvious intellect – a professional engineer no less! – had trouble with Chemistry 101! My illusions are shattered….

Actually, straight-up and on the level, if I had a dollar for every kid who told me in class, “Mr. Smith (not my real last name), I know I’m not going to use this in my job, so why do I have to learn it?” …. I’d be wealthy today.

That was a long time ago; my career as a scientist was spent doing R&D in industry and at a couple of medical schools.

Oh, just don’t ask me how to do a Grignard reaction, OK? I got the highest score on the final exam in my organic chemistry I class, but within two weeks after the course, forgot almost everything I’d memorized. Wish there had been more lab… that was fun and useful, too.

And don’t ask me questions about Gibbs Free Energy.
