Competition is a good thing. I like the recent flurry of red dot sight designs, prism sights, LPVO, etc. If EOTech and Trijicon want to stay competitive, they’re going to have to come down a bit on prices.
But what do I know.

That’s pretty nice indeed.

I doubt EOTech or Trijicon will drop prices due to competition.
After all there’s all these low-speed, high-drag mall ninjers who’ll pay any price to have “..the exact same thing all those really kewl operators use”.

I have several of the older PA Cyclops 1X prisms. Work great with my eyes and still have a reticle if the battery fails. I like what they’ve done to the size. But it seems to me they should have made the adjustments half minute instead of 1 minute.

The etched reticle is the game changer. I wanted magnification as well, so went with one of these–

The mall ninjas aren’t the ones bidding up the prices; the fed.gov types – military, national security and federal LE – those are the ones keeping prices high. Why? Because in spending the taxpayer’s money, they have no incentive to economize. And they don’t.
I don’t pretend to know what Trijicon’s cost per unit for the ACOG has been over its production life cycle, but I can pretty much guarantee you it isn’t anywhere near the $1500 retail price they charge per unit (or more, depending on model). Even allowing for volume discounts and write-downs of various kinds, that company has been make a very handsome living for many years off federal contracts. The civilian goobers who buy their stuff are strictly an after-thought.
Recently, however, Trijicon lost the contract to supply the army with optics, to a relatively new and upstart competitor in the optics field, Sig-Sauer. Sig is very well-respected in FA design/manufacture, but somewhat of a newcomer to the tactical optics arena…which may be why Trijicon didn’t see them coming.
At any rate, Trijicon is now going to have to learn the same painful lesson that Colt learned after losing their government contract for M-16s/M-4s… namely, that neglecting the civilian side of your business is to leave your firm without a safety net if fed.gov takes their business elsewhere.
The bubbas buying ACOGs or Eotechs are full MSRP aren’t the problem. They’re a drop in the bucket, business-wise, to those firms. It is that the government has monopolized their output for so long, and has paid top dollar while doing so.
