The C-Clamp AR-15 Grip

Mike Gover discusses it. While I like that he mentioned Kyle Lamb, I was under the impression from prior reading that the specops guys had essentially learned that grip from the gaming community, and then passed it down through the ranks. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

You are not wrong. As the story was related to me by some of the real deal high-speed/low-drag guys, the original form of the C Clamp came from 3 gun competition and morphed into the version seen today.
If you’re young and limber it works pretty good. If arthritis and bursitis are your constant companions, not so much.

C-clamp works great for gamers because it gives you great control for rapid transitions. But, as @Herschel noted, gamers are in-play for 10 seconds to 2 minutes and you’ll suffer muscle fatigue after a few minutes of C-clamp grip.
Despite Glover’s demonstration, there’s nothing special about the C-clamp grip that gains you maneuverability for in-vehicle operations.
The mantra “select the correct tool for the job” translates to “select the correct stance and grip for the mission.”

If I give you a 6′ pole and have you defend against an attacker your outward hand will go thumb over the top and this is an ambidextrous response. Try the same with a woman or child and its the same reaction as its in the wiring. If you cant run the arm like this you can train out the weakness. Just like an exercise regimen, time your activity and start with just the gun. Now start adding all the cool gun stuff you dont use, starting at the magwell and do another session. Then move that cool stuff down the barrel. Now add more cool stuff so it looks like a porcupine, and when you can do your session for several minutes at a time your ready. Repeat as you weaken, as you will, if you dont make the regimen regular.
Now that your stronger, take this to a lazer sighting system and engage targets and see how quick you have become. Accuracy is on you!

Of course there isn’t a rule, any more than there’s a rule to do shoothouse combat or room clearing a single way. It all depends on the circumstances. I’ve sat and listened to my son describe the TTPs they would use depending upon the room, the enemy, the force structure and size they brought, the weapons employed, etc.
