Under Barrel Shotgun
BY Herschel Smith3 years ago
At SOFREP.
It’s a straight throw bolt action shotgun. My first thought when seeing this was “I wonder if this is an AOW, Firearm, short barrel shotgun, or what?”
The article answers that.
The actual M26 MASS is an NFA item that would be considered an AOW or short-barreled shotgun. The 7.5-inch barrel ensures you got to get ATF permission and pay a tax stamp. However, C-More also advertises a title 1 model with an 18-inch barrel known as the M26 CMC. The gun has an MSRP of $1,399, so be prepared to spend some money. Plus, it doesn’t seem like they are easy to find either.
I honestly don’t see much utility in this, but leave it to the ATF to ruin the fun in everything.

The box mag has it’s attraction, but for that sort of doubloons, KAC’s Masterkey would be my choice.

How often would one switch ammo types, anyway?

The M26 was The Good Idea Fairy™ coming up with a way to have a shottie close at hand for door breaching that was cheaper, and actually carried more rounds, than Knight’s Masterkey.
It’s much harder on an M4 than the M203 or M320 grenade launchers, but as long as the lower receiver gages, Uncle doesn’t care, and even if the lower does get coded out, Uncle will just buy a new one on the taxpayer’s bank account.
Life’s grand when the NFA doesn’t apply.

I serviced these for a Army Seaborne Unit that had them. Interesting weapon. Check it out!

As has been pointed out this item was created for a specific reason…to allow for the use of door breaching rounds while keeping a rifle handy for .Mil entry teams. As such cost is at best a secondary consideration and “NFA Item”….ha! But in an HONEST America you or I should and would be able to buy one and walk out of your local gun store anytime we wanted to.
