Venturing out into even the mildest of nature without a firearm? I don’t leave my apartment without one. That guy was lucky—this time.

If he hadn’t turned he’d be dead. Cats like to jump on the back of prey, knock them down, get them disoriented and panicked and partly immobilized while they slip their head and jaw around to bite the throat. Death is not quick. Sometimes it’s an hours long ordeal for the prey while the cat holds it by the neck patiently waiting for it give up its spirit.
There’s a lot of risk in taking on a full grown man face to face. Smart cat.

And the title (Herschel just copies them) of the video is completely wrong. The cat was set up on that trail. He didn’t chase the man. I even doubt the cat was stalking. I’m certain it would have preferred a bunny or small dear to amble by but ambush predation presents the target of opportunity that it will, so the cat took a chance.
He walked right by the cat without even seeing it. This is as much a testament to the cat as it is to the stupidity of the guy. I like to remind people that if a bear doesn’t want to be seen or heard it won’t. This is also true for cats and especially with all of that low tan scrub and tan dirt. The camouflage for the cat is great in that area.

I think its a Bob Cat. I used a magnafying glass to look at it when sideways and I didn’t see a long tail at all, even after freezing the picture.
That’s interesting. I didn’t see the long beard typical of Bobcats.

That’s definitely a cougar. Pause at 24 seconds. Face is clear and you can see the tail.
As Fred said, turning and yelling at it saved this guy’s life.

FT – turn down the playback speed to 25% and you will easily see the tail.
This is why I stopped riding my mountain bike by myself in central AZ. Lots of lions around here, and armed or not, it would be tough to take on a lion that has you by the back of the neck.

Carry a gun and a knife. Nothing less for that trail. Fire starter, water, and a bevy sack at a minimum.
Not heavy and as people move into their area they will attack at some point.

Cat seems small and inexperienced like it wasn’t sure at first what it was going after and then saw it was a man, causing it to bolt into shrub. WTAF is this guy doing in that thick shrub anyway?

Looks scripted to me. Did Mr. Red Pants make a pet out of this young cat. He did an excellent job of filming with his cell phone moments from death. Personally I would have pitched the cell phone at the cat and polluted the landscape. Why weren’t that cats ears flat on it’s back the way most cats posture themselves during an attack? Inquiring minds want to know.

I agree @Brad. Seems like kitty was interested in those red joggers. Maybe to kitty it looked like juicy red meat walking around making rah rah noises…heh heh.
