Rescue In The N.C. Mountains

A hiker who impaled their foot with a tent stake was rescued from the top of a mountain in North Carolina.
Crews were called at 11:50 p.m. Thursday about an injured hiker at the top of Shortoff Mountain in the western part of the state, according to Burke County Search and Rescue.
Two rescuers reached the hiker around 2 a.m. Friday and found the person was “immobile due to an impalement of the foot by a tent stake,” Burke SAR wrote on Facebook.
Rescuers and EMS crews “slowly and safely” helped the hiker down the mountain and got the person out of the woods by 10:30 a.m., officials said.
How on earth does one impale their foot by a tent stake when camping? Anyway, don’t do that.

Help! I accidentally staked my foot to the ground! Seriously – WTF?

The source says it was a hiker and it (assuming the call came shortly after the injury occurred) happened after dark. Could the hiker have stepped on a stake left behind by someone else?

I am sick of the corruption of grammar by the transgender freaks. I thought professional writers were supposed to know something about the English language. “Their” is plural. It does not belong in that sentence. The proper syntax is “A hiker impaled HIS foot” or “A hiker impaled HER foot.”
You could, of course, say “A hiker’s foot was impaled” without revealing the gender of the individual, which is not the best solution but is better than using “their.”

Probably along the lines of…
Here, hold my beer. Now y’all watch this!
Also
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.
If it turns out he stepped on a stake left behind by someone else, I will issue a formal apology.

If one were wearing proper foot gear for that environment, it would be impossible to have this injury by stepping on a stake. More likely this individual left the tent at night to take a leak and went barefoot instead of putting boots on.
