If you have an old school compass you’re not dependent on powered technology. This is important. Of course lost people get confused and stop trusting their gear. It’s good to have backups if you can handle the weight.

The USMC requires its infantry officer candidates to be able to navigate with a map and compass.
Several years ago a number of candidates were found to be cheating on the course by use of GPS.
They were discharged. As they should have been.
