Effect of Rifle Barrel Length on Penetration
BY Herschel Smith2 years, 7 months ago
These results are very interesting. The 14.5″ and 16″ barrels had greater penetration, but obviously the 20″ barrel tore up the medium better. It’s almost as if genius Eugene Stoner designed it that way.
Now. Do 77 grain.

I just came off of shooting 3gun moderately for ten years, a couple of years ago. When a match included a stage goes out to 500/600yds, an 18″ Wylde with heavy (75hornady, 77matchking) slugs was preferred with appropriate LVPO optic. It does fine in close quarters, indistinguishable from 16″ barrels up close.

the first video I saw, the M193 didn’t penetrate from a 16″ but punched right through from a 20″

Somewhere I have a 1/4-inch armor-plate with strikes from 55-gr and 62-gr (green-tip), from 16- and 20-inch barrels. Within 75 to 80 yards, the 55-grain projectiles penetrated every time. (IIRC the 20-inch barrel was required to penetrate the slightly greater distance.)
The 62-gr green-tip just went ‘splat’ – every time, regardless the range. Barely a mark on the plate.
The penetration of the 55-grain projectiles sheared the steel, removing a .30 caliber slug of material.
