30-30 Win At 1160 Yards

Shooting off-hand, no optics, a taped-on ladder sight – I’d say that’s fine shooting!
I love lever action guns, and I love the 30-30. I could shoot that cartridge all day long.

Optics could have helped. But pretty good shooting. Need to get to a longer range and see what I can do.

Most cowboy lever-guns feed from tube magazines, so for safety, they are loaded with cartridges whose bullets are either flat-nose or round-nose, to minimize the chances of a primer being set off under recoil, by the bullet behind it.
I do not know the extent to which this hypothetical danger is real, but the manufacturers all caution that spitzer (pointed) bullets are not to be used in tubular magazines. It may be their lawyers talking, but that’s their recommendation.
However, there is no reason whatsoever a spitzer bullet cannot be single-loaded without using the tube magazine. And with such bullets and the much-improved aerodynamics (higher ballistic coefficients) they offer, substantially longer and more-accurate shots may be taken.

Amazing shooting. It’s hard enough shooting irons at 1000 yards from a bench and to do it offhand is simply amazing. Spitzer bullets could be used, but I think the limiting factor is the wobble zone and the small size of the target at that distance.

@Georgiaboy61,
Or you can use something like this.

Remington solved that tube magazine problem long ago with its model 14. It’s a shame the idea never caught on with other rifles.

I’m not familiar with that model, but I’ll be sure to look it up. Browning’s BLR series solved it, too, by using a detachable box magazine. They’re pricey, but supposed to be superb rifles. And you can get them in common hunting calibers, such as 270 Win., 30-06, 300WM, etc.

The problem of using pointy bullets in a lever gun was also solved with the Savage 99.
