Church Lady Intel – Famine

A Beef Cattle operation that runs between 2300-2600 head to market each year got a phone call from the FDA and were told to kill and bury all the cattle on site. If I understood it correctly, this isn’t a one-time deal. They were told not to bring their cattle to market anymore. This is no small operation and has been in service for years; several dozen breeding bulls, husbandry hand-raising calves, with pasture and hay-fed animals. There are no disease or potential risk factors involved. The subject came up when farm land for sale was being discussed. The government is going to pay what presumably is a fair price per head, but that’s not the point.
The internet indicates 500 plus pounds of consumable meat per animal; somebody knows more precisely how much, but it’s a lot.

This seems very odd. What would be the purpose of intentionally removing healthy beef animals from market?

This story is meaningless. I need to know more. Why would the FDA make that call? How do they have that authority? Wouldn’t that be the job of the Department of Agriculture? Where did this happen? All hearsay until more facts are provided.

I bought half an angus steer for $1200 last November (total price paid). Dressed out to ~220 lbs of meat into my freezer, but I did not opt for the lesser quality cuts (liver, ribs, etc.). Whole cow nets about 500-600 lbs useable meat, depending what you call ‘useable’.

Typically a cow produces 50-55% of hoof weight in meat, with a qualified butcher. This can increase slightly if you want all the extras, tongue, and organ meats.
Again typically cattle are slaughtered at approximately 1000 lbs hoof weight.

Saw this elsewhere, with links to a twitter thread. On the thread, the original poster stated he’d received a letter, but refused to post the actual letter. There was no evidence or follow-up from the OP that he was indeed a cattle rancher, or that he had any evidence, or what he was going to do. Thinking is that this is a hoax. A much more believable story would be shutting down the feedlots and/or meat packing plants. Covid did a good job there already. But telling the individual ranchers to kill their own herd and bury them? Not seeing that happen. I have relatives in the cattle industry. Pretty sure they’d rather let the cattle stay in the pasture an extra season, depending on cost of hay and feed.
