Double Tap 450 SMC Ammunition Available
BY Herschel Smith2 years, 3 months ago
Several weeks ago I wrote to Double Tap and asked when 450 SMC was going to be available again, just as I said I would. They responded that they were planning a run of it soon.
Reader Ned happened to stumble on this before I did. They have it in stock now. They don’t show it under available ammunition. You’ll have to go to the search bar and type in ‘450 SMC’.
Remember, you’ll need a stronger recoil spring to shoot this ammunition.
I’ve already bought a box for hunting trips. I recommend that you go to the range and shoot a couple of rounds to get a feel for the additional recoil over .45 ACP. After that, it’s up to you. This is expensive ammunition.

Back on 28JUN2022 I bought 5 boxes of Underwood 45 ACP +P 255 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose Hi-Tek@ $14.42 box/20 rds from Midway USA. Got an email with special price.
Too good to pass up!!
Currently it lists @ $29.39 box/20 rds.
This is a round nose flat point hard cast Hi-Tek coated non-expanding bullet. Underwood lists it at 925 fps 484 ft/lbs.
Buffalo Bore Ammunition Outdoorsman 45 ACP +P 255 Grain Hard Cast Lead Flat Nose lists @ $39.49 box/20 rds from Midway USA.
The end of the box says 925 fps 484 ft/lb
Tim Sundles (Owner of Buffalo Bore) says 960 fps (which calculates to ME of 522) out of his gold cup and to use a 4-6 lb heavier than stock recoil spring
Double Tap lists 450 SMC 255gr hard cast solid SWC @ 1030fps 601 ft/lbs 5″ 1911.
Double Tap lists 450 SMC 230gr FMJ-FP @ 1130fps – 5” 1911 (they don’t list the ME, but it calculates out to 652 ft/lbs).
$34.87 for either box of 20.
Good hot stuff!
I might have to get a heavier recoil spring and try some.
8 in magazine & 1 in chamber gives me 50% more shots than a revolver.
For comparison Underwood’s .44 Remington Magnum 255gr Keith-Type Semi-Wadcutter Gas Check HI-TEK Coated Hard Cast lists @ 1350 feet per second.
The muzzle energy is 1032 ft/lbs.
My HOT .44 Mag reload is a 250 gr Keith SWC-GC at 1345 fps using Alliant 2400.
ME calculates to 1004 ft/lbs out of my S&W 629 4” over my old Shooting Chrony chronograph.
