Molly Hatchet
BY Herschel Smith2 years, 2 months ago
There aren’t many legitimate Southern Rock bands around anymore (Blackberry Smoke is about the only one left). The old ones are gone: Marshall Tucker Band (all new players), Allman Brothers Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Grinderswitch, and so on.
Molly Hatchet was one of the greats of that era and that genre. This is a great concert. Blackberry Smoke plays in the same spirit these guys did.

Gimme some “Gator Country”!!!!
Cause I’ve got “Dreams I’ll Never See”!!
I’m another Blackberry Smoke fan!!!
We went to see 38 Special last year, none of the original members left, but some members overlapped the old guys and the new guys.
Still a good concert!
Saw Blackberry Smoke in June this year (on my 65th birthday) at the Shed in Maryville.
Had a LARGE time!
That’s our third BBS concert, 30NOV2019 Homecoming at the Tabernacle in Hot-lanta, then Homecoming again 26NOV2021 last year.
I heard rumors of a show in Asheville??
Try the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Derek Trucks joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1999 after being a guest musician on some of their albums.
His uncle Butch Trucks was the founding member drummer of the Allman Brothers Band.
He can wail on that slide guitar!
Susan Tedeschi sounds very much like Bonnie Raitt and she’s pretty good on guitar also.
Now you’ve got me waking everyone else on night shift up with my Southern Rock playlist lol.
Just an old Tarfoot engineer rockin’ out to my southern rock. :)

I very appreciate not only this article and it’s sentiment, but your site and dedication to it!
I live abroad (though remain an unreconstructed Appalachian) and get my soul fed using an internet radio app- Triode.
Using it, I listen to
All Dixie rock.
They do include some foreigners from time to time, but I’ve never found them to be objectionable. Besides, anyone that plays Hogjaw or Elias T Hoth deserves some latitude in selections in my mind.
I strongly urge like minded to check out at least ADR.
And much as I hate to say it, I don’t think the South’s gonna do it again.
Though I am excited about the possible soon return of Jesus the Christ.
Stay true my brothers

I’ve seen Molly Hatchet 3 times over the years. First, in an arena – what a show!
Second – at a club in Colorado Springs – great show, up close!
Third – at Mr. Lucky’s in Phoenix – what happened to Molly Hatchet? These guys were drunker than I was and couldn’t even remember the words to their most popular songs! I couldn’t get drunk enough to enjoy them, so wound up walking out in the middle of it.
I hear they’ve cleaned up and are playing better. They are supposed to be playing near me sometime this month or next month, but I have no desire to go see them again. Besides, I’m not comfortable in crowds like I once was.

Saw several bands together, 38 special, molly hatchet, almond bros, among others. Molly Hatchet blew them all away, not even close.

I’m probably gonna get flamed for saying this, but the Allman Brothers were never the same after Dickey Betts left/was asked to leave. Some years back during their comeback, I heard the much-ballyhooed “new” version of the band with Warren Haynes and Allen Woody in place of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley – and was impressed.
Some years after that yet again, I had occasion to see the band live and they were a huge disappointment. I think Derek Trucks was in the group by that time. He’s a decent-enough player, but I don’t get all the hype. He sure as heck can’t fill Duane Allman’s shoes or for that matter Dickey Betts’ or Warren Haynes, either. ‘Course, now that Greg Allman is gone and so is Butch Trucks, they’re gone for good.
The legendary .38 Special is still out on the road knocking ’em dead, with Don Barnes singing lead for them. They lost Donnie Van Zant and Jeff Carlisi some years back when they retired from the road, but they still deliver a good show with some new guys carrying on the name. Saw ’em twice back in their prime in the 1970s and 1980s, and I know the band well.
38 Special don’t always get the love they deserve from the southern rock community, because they took their sound uptown for AOR airplay in the 1980s, but they are the real deal and always have been. Donnie Van Zant came of age watching his older brother Johnnie lead Lynyrd Skynyrd, and former 38 Spl. bassist Larry Junstrom filled the bass chair for Skynyrd for a time. In their prime, 38 Special could play rings around bands with much bigger names, and not even break a sweat. Like I said, they were the real deal….

@Gb61- I saw the ABB several times, with and w/o Dickey.
I prefer Dickey to Duane (Blasphemy I know.)
Warren a good fit w/ Allman Brothers. He can do damn near anything with a guitar.
Gov’t Mule I regard highly.

I grew up on Molly Hatchet.
Sadly, Molly Hatchet has no original members, as all founding members are now deceased. Guitarist Bobby Ingram didn’t join until 1987, and in 2000 Ingram became the sole owner of the trade and service mark “Molly Hatchet.” As good as the current lineup of Molly Hatchet may be, with no original members it’s really nothing more than a tribute band.
Think about it, none of them had anything to do with the most popular Molly Hatchet songs on their set list. They sign autographs on LP & CDs that they did not play on.
Even more sad, I had to do the same thing as a hired-gun for a well-known 70s/80s band from the Midwest, which ceased to be in 2012. It wouldn’t be right for me to name the band, but our frontman was a founding member.
Bobby Ingram certainly has some history with Molly Hatchet. But no hit songs. The ethical thing to do would be to stop pulling the wool over people’s eyes and call the band what it is, a tribute-band, and change the name.
My all-time favorite Southern band Blackfoot is another that tours with no original members. Rickey Medlocke runs the band behind the scenes. Once in a while Rickey will play a show with them but that’s it. Lynyrd Skynyrd keeps him busy enough though.
