Review Of The Rossi 454 Casull Lever Action Rifle
BY Herschel Smith2 years, 2 months ago
This rifle is “unobtanium” except for used, and even then, simply not available. The comments section features educated folks. One commenter remarks that “I’ve been writing to Henry trying to get them to chamber one of their rifles in .454 Casull.” So have it to no avail.
Another commenter questions “Did you get any blow back shooting the 454? When they first came out the only gun store here that had them. The counter man said every one they sold had to be sent back because of blow back from the action. And thats what made me get a 44mag instead back then.”
I don’t think Rossi makes this rifle anymore.

Why not just buy a .45-70?

I had a friend who got a wheel gun when the 454 Casull first got hot.
He invited me to shoot his new gun using his “fun” game.
He would load one hot factory load and the rest were his hand loaded SWC rounds, spin the wheel and hand you the gun.
The game re-enforced the habit to always control the gun, and never have a cavalier grip. Serious guns require serious shooters.
Having said that, my friend would very occasionally would also drop a second “hot” round on the opposite side of the cylinder…
From this we learned two things:
1. Never slack up on proper grip and control…
AND
2. My friend was an asshole.
But I Love him and everyone should be blessed with at least one friend that teaches hard lessons.

Great rifle and nice to have the same caliber as your sidearm when out and about. It’s compact and makes a great scabbard or truck gun.
Reports of high recoil are misleading; several small framed females I know shoot the 454 with no trouble at all.
I think they do still make it but you can find used ones occasionally.

George – almost the same power with less weight and greater ammo payload. I have a 45-70.
I’ve always wanted a Rossi 454, but assumed one could shoot 45 Colt loads with no problem. Wanted to be able to carry my 45 Colt Mountain Gun and a rifle with same ammo. Now I’m less interested.
