Seven Coyotes At A Time

Police in a Massachusetts town said a dog had to euthanized after seven coyotes attacked it, just hours before a man was also attacked and bitten while walking his dogs.
Massachusetts is home to the Eastern Coyote, a medium-sized predator and opportunistic feeder, according to MassWildlife.
Reportedly, officials estimate there are around 11,500 coyotes in the state, as per 2021.
Cohasset, a town in Massachusetts, saw two different attacks in just one day on August 27, police told local media in a release. In just a few hours, two dogs were attacked outside a home by a group of seven coyotes while a man was also bitten during an attack on his two dogs.
In the first attack, police said the dogs were off leash when approached and attacked by the group of coyotes. The owner described it as “coordinated” when speaking to WCVB.
“It was almost a coordinated effort. It was absolutely incredible,” Jeff Pratt said. “Three came out one way, four came around the back way and attacked the second dog. I had seven coyotes in my driveway.”
Dog Bella sadly did not survive the attack as she was later euthanized due to the extensive injuries she suffered. Fellow pup Sadie was also left with serious injuries.
You better get yourself a gun and carry it boy.
Oh yea. This is Massachusetts. Never mind. Talk to your “leaders” about the local cops who exist to “protect and serve.” I guess they did that when they put your dog down.

Not almost. The things people say about animals are bizarre. It’s as if they have been living completely insular lives separated from the planet, having their brainwaves rewritten dumbing them down into docile herdlike prey. But I was told that’s a crazy conspiracy theorist point of view so it can’t be true.

Getting a carry permit in MA isn’t all that hard (my sister there has one). But you won’t get reciprocity in any other state that requires a permit. Of course your mag capacity is limited.

Having grown up in ranching country, you learn to take a strong disliking to the song dogs. It pretty much sealed it for me when I came across a cow being attacked while she was giving birth.
We used to shoot them, then hang the carcass beside cattleguards. We did it to keep the cows from milling around the cattleguards, because they’d figure out they could jump them or walk them after a while. Most folks just thought we were being assholes.
I’ll still get one climbing over my chainlink fence to steal a chicken every once in a while. One got his tail hung up going back over and left it behind. That was a trippy thing to find hanging on the fence. So, somewhere out there is a bobtailed coyote running around.

I wonder if they were truly coyotes. Around KY/TN, the only ones that (stay) packed up were coy-dogs. Cross breeds between dogs and coyotes. Coyotes will congregate, but I’ve rarely seen them hunt (long) together…could happen…but not used to seeing it.
I have seen more aggressive behavior from coy-dogs and wonder if the 7 could be a litter of mixed breeds versus true coyotes. Would be interesting to see if they’re captured what their composition is…still, advise to carry is always good where wildlife abound.

The eastern coyote is about 5/8 western coyote, 2/8 wolf, and 1/8 large dog. They hybridized with the other animals during the migration from the west. The eastern coyote is 50% larger than the western coyote, and unlike the wester coyote it forms packs. It is comfortable around humans, and it readily adapts to urban environments.
Dr. Stan Gehrt of the School of the Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State has a long-standing research program on urban coyotes. He estimates that 2,000 coyotes are living in Chicago, including downtown. The urban coyotes are generally better fed than rural coyotes, are heavier and have larger litters. There are all sorts of food for them, including dumpster garbage, rats, racoons, possums (all urban-adapted) and small dogs and cats. The coyotes shelter under dumpsters and porches and within decorative foliage against houses if it is dense enough.
When I was a boy in rural eastern Massachusetts in the 50’s we were warned about coydogs, but I never saw or heard any. Nowadays in north central rural Ohio I do hear them. My daughter saw one walking the tracks in downtown Columbus, and I saw a dead on on I-71 in Columbus.
Somewhere on YouTube there is a video of a coyote serenading a walker and his two dogs on a lake front park in Chicago.
Eastern coyotes inhabit every county and most probably every city and suburb east of the Mississippi. Western coyotes apparently still dominate in the west. My wife heard them in San Diego when she was living there in the 70’s.

My youngest daughter lives along the 303 and El Mirage in Sun City West, AZ. They live in a very urban environment but with a plethora of desert and brush.
She just sent me a video today @ 0900 of a Yote trying to get over a 8 ‘ wall to kill their neighbors chickens. Even ASU West has a pack of about 20 yotes that live by the trash bins on campus and that is in the middle of Phoenix.
I wouldn’t pull the trigger on one unless it was about to chew on me but I think several Duke #2 traps would go along way in making them scarce.
