If you can find it. My observation is that the newer Marlin 45-70 as well as the Henry 45-70 are simply unobtanium.

I love shooting this gun, and it’s beautiful. He makes a very good point about shooting the large caliber lever action off hand. If you simply go with the punch a little, it’s smooth as butter. With a semi-shotgun, for example, you need to stay leaned into it to get back on target quickly. But with this lever 45-70, you have to cock it anyway, so do that as you press forward back into it, lining up your next shot. In fact, if you carry this weapon primarily or exclusively in the wilderness, you should practice that exact thing for quick and smooth follow-up shots as needed.

I managed to get the Henry 45-70 brass side loader. I ordered it as soon as it became available but it still took over six months to get. I’ve been looking for the same in both 30-30 and 44 Mag. Both still made of unobtainium.

Taylor and Company still has a few, in many models and calibers. Pretty salty, but you’ll find no smoother shooting rifles for the money. I saved for a year to get one and it was well worth it.
