Scope Mount & Ring Prices
BY Herschel Smith1 year, 11 months ago
Outdoor Life has an article entitled The Best Scope Rings of 2022. They go the spectrum from Seekins to Night Force, from Zeiss to Leupold. As for prices, they go from budget (just over $50) to around $500.
That’s what I’ve noticed about this market – the massive divide in price point. Precision Rifle Blog has a rundown of what the long range competition shooters use, and as anyone might guess, it leans towards the pricey end of things with Nightforce being the most prominent of the choices.
Spuhr makes some very expensive mounts/rings too, mostly in the range of $400, up to $500 for quick detach mounts (which in my book are preferable to fixed mounts and rings).
What are the experiences of our readers? Do you find much difference between moderately priced rings and the pricey ones? Which ones do you prefer, and why?
I find that the really cheap ones are really cheap and not much worth having.

I have faith in the old tried and true Weaver scope mounts. The old ‘claw on one side, screws on the other’ have never failed me in any blame for loosening and causing a bad shot to occur. They have been very versatile I remember having to use one of their extension mounts backwards to accommodate a short scope to a reasonable eye relief. Not pretty – but they work and to me, that is important, having faith in your equipment.

I pretty much exclusively use Warne rings and I’ve mounted hundreds of scopes for customers using them as well. You can spend as much as you want on any gun part but I don’t think more than $100-150 for rings and bases makes any difference for 99% of shooters. Everything is done on CNCs nowadays whatever the price so you basically pay for design and QC.

I typically run Warne rings, but I got a set of rings as a freebie from Primary Arms with the purchase of a 1-8 scope, so figured I’d give them a try. So far, they’ve performed quite well. I don’t know what the price was on the rings, but I doubt they were very high priced considering they were throwing them in for free.

Seems to me rings and rails are passive devices that have little to do with a rifle’s accuracy. They either fit or don’t fit, and move or don’t move. If they fit and don’t move, that’s good enough.
My preference is to take that $500.00, buy a reasonably priced (not necessarily cheap) set of rings and buy better optics that do make a difference. I’ve got two sets of Leupold Backcountry rings on benchrest rifles that work quite well and only cost a hundred bucks. I see little point in “upgrading” my rings.
