Bolt Throw
BY Herschel Smith2 years ago
I had never really thought of bolt throw in the practical terms he discusses it, i.e., interference with scopes and mounts. That seems to be basically the only reason it really matters unless you’re really into the mechanics of bolt lugs and how they fit up. Let me know in the comments if you disagree.
For the record, I could listen to Ryan Muckenhirn discuss tying his shoe for an hour and it would be interesting to me. But even more interesting would be to get an invitation to a hunt with him. Any kind of hunt – pronghorn, upland birds, anything.

One of my favorite rimfire bolt actions are the CZ 452 and even older Brno models 1 – 5. Their bolt throw is high, requiring higher scope mounts that make a ‘cheek weld’ more of a ‘jaw weld’. With iron sights, not a problem, in fact the stock appears made for them. I think the newer CZ models 455 and 457 had these bolt throws modified, but I don’t have any information about that. The 452 suits me fine.
Manipulating the bolt with gloves is clumsier and I can see collisions with the scope ocular happening far more often because of this.

It does have bearing on scope mounts. Forget what it was but had a set of mounts that would not allow the bolt to operate. Frustrating.
