Hogs in Houston

As one might expect, here’s another article on the destructiveness of feral hogs. Homes, golf courses, farms, graveyards, you name it. They destroy everything in their path. Here’s the money quote for me.
Jamie Sugg, the Texas A&M Agrilife extension agent in Walker County told Houston Media last week: “It’s not a case of if you have a hog problem, but when. They are everywhere.”
I suspect this was referring to Texas, but it could just as well have been America. It’s not a matter of if, but when you start suffering hog problems.

I wonder if they’ll eventually adapt to cities like racoon and coyotes. They’re supposedly intelligent creatures. Of course, stealth is not their top attribute although they can hide well in many types of non-urban cover. Haven’t heard much lately, but New Orleans used have some trouble with them.

There no shortage of Texans like me who would are willing to kill as many hogs as possible. A big problem is that too many Texas landowners wanted to charge hog hunters for hunting on their land. Now there may be more hogs than the ability to exterminate even if all landowners were required to allow hunting on their property.

What June J said. A lot of landowners would rather complain about their hog problem than actually eradicate them if it means allowing people to hunt on their land for free.

Similarly, Chinese carp have migrated over generations up the Mississippi and are now moving up the Tennessee. The TN state government has both promised eradication programs and projects while also authorizing a Fish Stix plant to be built along the river for commercial gain from the invasive fish. Money drives many bad decisions.

Here in Honolulu the pigs (we call them pua’a) don’t seem interested in entering urban/suburban areas, unlike the damn chickens.

I’ll second, or even third June J and Latigo Morgan. Both points are spot on in Texas. Fortunately for me, I have a standing invite to a couple of places for feral hog target practice. Strictly to feed the vultures of course.

Look on the bright side, this invasion should make it easier for those that need to dispose of communists.
