Making Your Beretta 1301 Shoot Even Better
BY Herschel Smith1 year, 5 months ago
Just several days ago we were discussing how to get the most distance out of your tactical shotgun, and the corollary issue of how to get the best pattern.
Little did I know this was going to come out on that very issue. These results are very impressive.
Here’s the catch. The choke is currently not available. I’ve written Kick’s Industries to ascertain when it will become available. I’ll let you know what they respond.

I have a factory Remington XXfull turkey choke on one of my 870’s. It was purchased expressly for shooting buck shot for home defense role. Did read that it was NOT RECOMMENEDED for slug shooting (darn it !). So no slugs for me unless I change the choke.
I don’t recall any claims for recoil reduction like this one has. It does look cool !
Thanks for letting us know about this one.

Interesting, a crew down in Texas are making “ Duck Bills”, they also thread in as a choke. The duck bill was made famous by SEAL Teams in the Rung Sat Dist of Vietnam. Mostly Ithaca Feather Weights, I’ve seen pics from back then with an 870, and a Winchester 1200, I think.
They spread the shot pattern or open the pattern up. There’s a down side, one can no longer shoot slugs thru the SG when that Duck Bills threaded on.
Innovative and timely back then. Finding a practical application these days is easy. Home security works for us. I screwed one on my wife’s 20 gauge youth model 870, works for our intended needs.
I also have an early version on one on my 18in Ithaca’s shotguns, it’s a stock four or five plus one chambered. Has a stock side saddle, in the home environment if someone’s in your home, what you initially grabs what you will likely have to fight with. I feel either of these tools to be more than adequate for the job.
That 1301 is a very popular shotgun, several shoot schools across the nation are presenting shotgun classes, at least at Thunder Ranch the 1301 is very popular.

As I commented before, the overrated 1301 strips the Flitecontrol wads, and spreads the group. Maybe Beretta should include one of those chokes, and warn not to use FC.

@Frank.
“Overrated.” Prove it.
And why would I want FFC if I can use this choke which does better?

If all one can buy is standard buckshot, then go with a full choke.
I don’t know if the recoil reducer is necessary, but if one feels like it is go with it.
I have a Remington Extra Full turkey choke that works well with standard buckshot. But, I run IC in my house gun because I have a good supply of Federal Flite Control.
Go with what works for you.

The 1301 is utterly reliable, soft-recoiling (well, for its weight anyway), and it cycles fast. Light Rio clay loads alternating with magnum buck… nary a hitch. I ran several hundred shells through it with zero problems… including 3″ ones.
But… my example didn’t group well with any brand of slugs (I tried seven), stripped Flitecontrol wads so no use using them (the linked video demonstrated the same problem, so it’s not just my example), the Mesa tactical stock rattles badly if you don’t have a sling on there (though granted that’s easy to tape down), the trigger is long and mushy, the plastic magazine extension cover won’t work with any available barrel/mag clamp except Beretta’s, and Beretta put the sling attachment on the BOTTOM of that clamp. You can’t flip it over, because the plastic cover isn’t the same size as the barrel… so, the shotgun rolls over on you when you sling it, or at least the way I sling them. Sling point should be in the top half of that clamp. There are no attachment points otherwise on the gun. This is why I say it’s over-rated.
Just needs the same brains that worked out the action to fix the outside, solve the barrel issues, and then I’d agree with the all the adulation. I’ll gladly buy the improved version in a few years.

I have agreed with you on the stock. I’m biased in that Langdon Tactical worked on mine and that includes a replacement to a Magpul stock.
I don’t shoot slugs so that doesn’t matter to me.
I haven’t had any issues with reloading or sling placement with the forend Langdon Tactical installed it has plenty of attachment points.
