Back in the late 80s, a sheriff’s detective I knew kept a 30 inch pump shotgun so he could “reach out” longer distances. This was back before ARs got so prevalent.

Ive got a 34″ single shot with a full choke. Its like AT&T great for swamp deer with buck shot. My Uncle has a 32″,pump with a full choke for turkey, from my Grandfather, Ithaca I think, built probably in late 40’s or early 50’s. I used a single shot with a rifled barrel on deer, open sights longest shot i made was at about 150 yards. 3″ Brennekee slugs, felt like a 458 win mag. Energy is king.

My jurisdiction used to be slug-only hunting (thankfully it was opened to rifle about 10 years ago).
I seem to recall seeing something from the state game people once to the effect that the maximum distance a slug could travel was about 600 yards.
