My 1911 Jams!
BY Herschel Smith1 year, 3 months ago
I ran across this video from three years ago and I like it when gunsmiths tell me they didn’t previously understand what’s going on but do now. That shows humility and a willingness to learn.
Anyway, he’s very big on Sig Sauer 1911 magazines because of the design. Do any readers have experience with Sig magazines? I don’t, and none of my 1911s jam.

No experience with SIG mags. I use Wilson Combat mags exclusively, and I don’t think I’ve ever had a stoppage traced to the mag.

I have a Sig 1911. It’s a great shooter. It came with two magazines and they both jam when used with the Sig Pistol. Wilson mags are trouble free however. Thousands of rounds thru the pistol.

I’ll mirror what Old Bill said, Wilson Combat mags are THE industry standard. Bill Wilson was asked by Ken Hackathorn what 1911 mags he would recommend. Bill answered, Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick. Asked if he recommended any otthers, “No.”

1911 authorities I trust: Bill Wilson, Mark Novak, Hilton Yam, Jerry Kuhnhausen.

I usually run Chip McCormack mags in my 1911’s. I do use SIG mags for my Detonics Scoremaster chambered in .451 Detonics Magnum. The different construction means that I’m unlikely to mix them with other mags loaded with .45 Auto.
They are good, well made mags. Sturdy, with a built-in bumper on the floorplate.

If a 1911 has feeding issues it might not be the magazine’s fault.
…But it’s a good place to start.

(Kuhnhausen goes into some detail as well.)
I have had good results with CMC 1911 magazines.

It is a rocker! Very cool. Turn it up. (/s)
Single stack is the way with .45 1911.
A bud swears by the Sig after years of owning US made 1911 only.
Results may vary.
The local CPUSA (D) commie public library used to have a now deleted gun book about a GI .45 on a closet shelf with 8 round magazine loaded for decades, the owner took it out back and it cycled and fired just fine.
Another one told the story of an Arizona lawman making a shot at 75 yards away at a silhouette in a trailer window with 1911.

Concur, I carried a Colt model 70 1911 for26 years working patrol. Wilson or McCormick just get it right. Personally I preferred the ten round Mc Cormack stainless mags.
And I had a special mag pouch’s built for four 10 round mags, the mag case swiveled had a button down single button to allowing mag movement. I’d exit my rig push the button the mag pouch was secured.
Also had a drop holster manufactured, drop was two to four inch’s and it swiveled similar to a scooter cops holster. Again a single button secured the holster for the 1911. Locking it in a straight down fashion. Very secure, the holster makers in Portland OREGON. Ted Blocker custom Holsters. Good kit.
worked closely with Ted Blocker holsters many years designing my own holsters I wanted to have built. Also had a lot of Browning Hi Power kit special built for my under cover needs.
Purchase 10 mags new yearly, usually on my Birthday, after a brisk workout on the range the last years models went into my war bag, affiliated with another one of my 1911s, the new mags into my daily carry kit.
Truth be told you can have the finest magazines in the world, if you can secure them and access them quickly it’s game over!
I just had a look, Blockers still doing business, and I had to smile their manufacturing drop down holster and magazine holders for folks.
I still have a couple of the holsters and mag pouch’s in my leather holsters and mag pouch drawers, at home.
The last holster and mag holder I had custom built was in 2006, retired in 2010, haven’t looked back.
Sorry to get crossed up, but good kit required further good kit for securing and quickly accessing that kit, when it’s needed quickly.

I had a Detonics Combatmaster I could never get to work right. Did everything I could think of, but never was able to get through a mag without at least one malfunction. It pained me to let it go become someone else’s problem, as I had wanted one for so long and was so excited when I finally ran across one for sale.
I didn’t want to sell it to anyone I knew. Had to take the financial hit by selling it to a gun store.

Some of these “ Tools” are very finicky. Ended up with an earlier Auto Ordnance 1911. All new Wilson rebuild stuff. End of the day, this is a pistol I will never use! Call it lack of faith, Cursed, Jinxed or? I just have zero faith in this tool.
Many men have tried to purchase it or trade me out of it. The answers always going to be no. It’s a gut feeling, something ain’t right. I’ll keep it, fiddle on it keep my 1911 skills set up with this one.
A dam shame when a man won’t put his chops on a 1911, this one will be deep 6ed, or stripped out, the parts used else wear.
Understand this is a God thing, not me being hard headed.
Regarding my post from yesterday, I received a email from my friend Bob, a very Skilled gun Smith. I’ve offered to share my swivel holster and swivel mag carrier with bob for review, it’s the Ted Blocker custom.
Have him run it for a year see if he likes it, more importantly offer improvement advice, constructive improvement advice.
