The Only Ones

BY Herschel Smith

So here is the scoop.  A police officer, specifically a deputy, heard an acorn drop on the roof of his car, and dumped two magazines into his own patrol car.

He is an army veteran of ten years, attended West Point, and then was an officer in Special Forces. He has never seen combat, and I guess that hasn’t change unless you count acorns.

I wonder why he never saw combat?  He says it was because he was an officer, but I doubt that because officers are still in combat they just don’t receive combat awards for it like the enlisted do (above a certain rank).

Anyway, here is the full report.  Remember folks, they are “the only ones” who can safely handle weapons, serve the community in life or death situations, and protect men and women from harm.

And in reality as we’ve observed so many times before, you’re never in more danger than when the police are around, and no situation is so bad or desperate that it cannot be made worse by the presence of the police.

You are your own best defense. As always.

Not knowing this man, I hesitate to speculate. However, I have known some genuine SF hosses … here’s a West Point grad with 10 years’ service, at least some of it in SF but no combat service despite the SpecWar op-tempo of the past decades … and he’s so spooked by an acorn that he dumps two magazines INTO the car? This episode should result in a very searching psychological eval and a fitness review.

Years ago military service in special forces would at least mean you were relatively competent. Today that is no longer the case.

Out of four special forces veterans I worked with at one location, one was quite competent and professional, one was mediocre at best, one was lazy in the extreme and was only semi literate. The last one? He could not be counted upon do anything as instructed and was not interested in trying. He seemed to enjoy making everyone around him angry and seemed at times to be trying for a psych removal.

The point is you cannot judge anyone by credentials anymore.

This incident, and the one at GFZ where two “police officers” in the Houston area did mag dumps into an apartment through obscured windows “where there was a suspected gun”….well, I don’t know what to say, other than the obvious.

I’ve asked this question before but it’s becoming more pertinent: “At what point is it legitimate to return fire in self defense whan one is being shot at by cops?” If I’m minding my own business, doing nothing wrong and Officer Unfriendly immediately jumps to “shoot now and do it a lot” for no actual reason, am I supposed to accept being fired upon or am I permitted to stop the threat? If Bad Bart, arch criminal with a long rap sheet, shoots at me it’s perfectly legitimate for me to return fire in self defense. What’s the difference between Bad Bart and Officer Unfriendly except that one may be dressed a bit nicer and driving a car I helped pay for?

@WiscoDave–Thanks. Don’t know how I missed that. I also saw the extended cut…wow. Just wow. That dude is very mentally unstable to be rolling on the ground yelling, “I’m Hit!” while mag dumping in the general direction of a perceived threat.

@Nosmo–I’ve wondered that myself. The reality is, they can shoot at you for whatever reason they want, and even kill you with no threat of repercussion. However, even if you are truly in the right and they start mag dumping on you for no reason and you manage to stop the threat–likely with one or two well placed shots–you’ll spend the rest of your life in prison. That’s how our injustice system works. Not saying it’s right, it just is.

Supposedly there was also a female sgt on scene that fired her weapon. She was given counseling after they investigated themselves and found no wrong doing. The male did resign, bets on how long before he is patrolling in another county?

The suspect was handcuffed in the back of the squad car. Unless he was hit by shrapnel from the rounds hitting the vehicle, he was unwounded. Both cops should be facing as many reckless endangerment counts as rounds they fired. We either need to disarm cops completely or issue them 5 shot 38 revolvers with no reloads, the 3 inch SP101 that Ruger did for the French Railway Police would be idea. Even has a lanyard loop so Officer Doofus doesn’t get his piece taken away from him or leaves it in a bathroom.

Then what, 30 plus rounds expended and the, mind you handcuffed man in the back seat didn’t have one puncture. The epitome of piss poor training and having zero standards.
