Computational fluid dynamics simulation of shooting a bullet from a rifle barrel

Cool CFD video. Based on the time of travel down the barrel (0.0006 s), I compute the lifetime of a barrel at 2000 shots to be 1.2 seconds.

Given the shock waves and turbulence, my suspicion is that it is an expensive calculation to do correctly. I notice the plug of air exiting the barrel colliding with outside air – as shown by reddish plug, It takes a surprising amount of distance for the bullet to catch up with all of it.
Probably missing from the simulation is the effect of rifling on that plug of air, and the spin of the bullet on the air after exit. I could not see any feature that would indicate rotation.
That said, interesting.
