Note to Smith & Wesson Sales, Marketing and Engineering

This note was sent to S&W sales, marketing and engineering.
To whom it may concern,
At my blog we’ve discussed the fact that Smith & Wesson has gotten into the lever action long gun market at long last.
We have noticed that this platform would be ideal for cartridges that are traditionally S&W cartridges, such as the 460 S&W magnum and the 500 S&W magnum.
Besides, at the moment the only way to obtain a rifle chambered in these cartridges is to purchase from Bighorn Armory.
It sure would be nice to see Bighorn Armory get some pricing competition in these calibers.
I would be interested in obtaining a rifle chambered for 460 S&W magnum, and would devote several posts to a review of said rifle.
Thank you for your consideration.

When I saw the headline, I thought the same words you wrote. As soon as I heard they were making a lever, I am hoping for a chambering in 460.

Herschel, I hope they pay attention to your idea. Chambering a S&W lever gun in .460 or .500 seems like a logical and popular idea. But as the survivor of employment with several large corporations, I can say that they are generally not receptive to ideas reported from outside the organization. In fact, if you are inside the company and you have an idea you’d really like to see realized, your best bet is to take it to a highly visible senior manager – who will then push it aggressively, claiming it was his idea. You might get a bonus for an unrelated project as a reward. I received nothing at all for my invention patented when I worked for Polaroid, which was commercialized and sold around the world. I hope S&W is different…I’d buy one of those .460 Mag lever guns myself!

They’ll send an early prototype right over for your review.

Roger J has it right – there’s a strong NIH component (Not Invented Here) in almost every corporation that precludes adopting innovations that do not follow the “approved path and procedure” which not only applies to something coming from outside but also things coming from the wrong place (or person) inside; organizations manufacture antibodies specifically to accomplish it.

@H.S.
Have you considered writing to Sturm & Ruger, to make your request? Their revitalized “Marlin” line of lever-actions are very well-made, and the chamberings you suggest would slot into their line-up nicely….
Can’t say what the response would be, but it never hurts to ask…

You are guaranteed to always miss the shots you don’t take, or something along those lines.

S&W is not capable of manufacturing a rifle comparable to a BHA.
