Review: Springfield Armory 1911 TRP
BY Herschel Smith
It’s their TRP, or Tactical Response Pistol, a 1911 model whether full size or commander. The 1911 Syndicate liked it when they reviewed it.
I do have one remark concerning model availability. They should give us a slide cut model for an optic. Otherwise, you have to remove the slide and send it out to be milled.
I’m not saying that all models should come that way, just that they should give us the choice of purchasing a model with a slide cut from the factory.
Then again, it doesn’t seem like any firearms manufacturer has ever listened to me when I write them or post remarks like this. S&W has summarily ignored my request for a lever gun shooting S&W500. They never even responded to my notes. I guess I’m not an “influencer.”
But I find these models to be very attractive, and you know how I like 1911s.

Man I wouldn’t be disappointed if I spotted the FDE one shown in the pic arrived at a local fun shop.

I shot one of those years ago; guy at the gun store I worked at had one and let me put a box through it. My goodness that was a wonderful pistol. And I agree with the request for an optics cut option. I would have a hard time keeping my money in the bank if that were an option, like Staccato does.

As a southpaw, I’m glad more and more manufacturers are putting ambi safeties on new pistols. I’m not exactly in the market for a third (or fourth, I lost count) 1911, but would still consider it depending on the day of the week and the phase of the moon.

I would ALWAYS consider another 1911. The problem is whether my wife considers it as well.

In the summer of 2001, I traded a (pre Bush ban) Franchi SPAS12 for a brand new, in the box Springfield Loaded model 1911A1. Frame is stamped “Imbel”, so it is made in Brazil.
I couldn’t tell you how many rounds I’ve put through that pistol. I rebuilt it with new springs not too long ago and put a Wilson “Bulletproof” extractor in it. It’s been stolen during a break-in, then returned to me when the cops arrested a dude and found him in possession of it. The bluing is well worn, and when I was thinking about sending it off to be refinished, my daughters begged me to leave it the way it is.
It’ll shoot pretty much anything I feed it, including some pretty sketchy reloads that must have been loaded with the dirtiest powder available.
The two-piece barrel still has good rifling, and I can still shoot clays out of the air with it from the draw as I proved this past Thanksgiving at my sister’s house.
Now, this pistol wasn’t even manufactured during “peak” Springfield. I can’t imagine what their new offerings must be like. As for trading what was then a shotgun worth twice as much as the pistol on the market? To this day, I still feel like I got the better end of that trade. I never did like that shotgun, except for the cool factor.
