20″ because the little .223 needs all the velocity it can get, as well as non-fmj bullets. Shorter barrel might be important if you are a vehicle crew.
Long barrel reduces flash. 20″ is the sweet spot as Stoner specified. Attach bayonet: you want stand-off for the pole-arm. More PT, more water, more ammo!
Okay video. It’s an important question to consider.

I am consistently hitting at 300 meters with a holo sight on an 8 inch plate, 16 inch barrel.
After 300 the 5.56 is a bit light for real effectiveness. I figure that my long gun is the best out to 1000 or so, 300 WSM. Universally an AR 10 in 7.62 is about the real response for broken ground. Urban environment the AR 15 in 16 inch configuration is spot on.
Stoner was correct as TSA says. But the need for a 600 yard gun in most hands when there is just not enough marksmanship in the general population.

Rifle length gas is the way I go, just because that was the way Gene Stoner designed it and I like the lack of recoil impulse and the low chamber pressures. Easy on the internals of the gun and a bit more user friendly. Nothing to do with ballistics at all.

20″ as Eugene Stoner designed, and I carried in the USMC. Excellent article on the subject: http://www.sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=1093
