Ruger LCR .327 Federal Magnum Revolver
BY Herschel Smith6 years, 3 months ago
For those who may not know, the .327 Fed. Mag. operates at pressures around 45,000 psi as opposed to 17,000 to 20,000 psi of the .38 Spl. The resulting upgrade in performance is enormous with .327 Fed. Mag. ammo providing 1,400 fps using the lighter bullets and more than 1,100 fps with the heavier weights. The other bonus is the Ruger LCR .327 Fed. Mag. holds six rounds rather than the usual five typical of small-frame revolvers.
I was about to say that this article is misleading and quoting chamber pressures in a pistol rather than a revolver, but I’m wrong. These velocities are associated with a 3.5″ wheel gun barrel length. I see that the 5.5″ barrels are getting more than 1600 FPS muzzle velocity.
This is impressive. How did I miss this hot little cartridge? As I said, it’s really difficult to keep up with the cartridges nowadays.

An added bonus is that it will also shoot, 32 H&R magnum, 32 S&W long, and 32 S&W. through the 327 mag.. just like a 38 spl. in a 357 mag.
Those last two are wonderful for practice as they are fairly mild.
We’ve hocked the 32 H&R mag. for years to folks that are newer shooters. Or might be sensitive to recoil just for that reason.
Good on Ruger for bringing it back. I believe they are also chambering their excellent SP101 in it! Which would be my choice.

Hershel,
I picked up a Ruger SP101 in 327 Fed Mag with a 3.5″ barrel several years ago and love it. Though some might doubt it, this caliber IS a real honest to goodness magnum. Folks on either side of you at the range can feel the pressure wave when you shoot full house loads. Although now discontinued, I lucked up on about 10 boxes of Speer 115 gr Gold Dot self defense ammunition when Academy Sports had a close out. This ammo is one of my closely guarded treasures for use in this pistol. I would not feel underarmed in the least with this ammo in Ruger’s stout revolver. If you come across one of these revolvers for sale at your LGS and have the spare money, I highly recommend buying it.

I bought one of the .327 Federal Mag LCRs. I could find both .32 SW cartridges, .32 H&R, and all the .32 Auto I wanted to buy. All would fire in the LCR. Never saw a box of .327 in the wild and it was rare online. Ended up selling it to a guy who wanted it for his wife to shoot .32 SW Long.

How would you describe the recoil and muzzle blast compared to a similar snubbie in .38 SPL and .357 Mag?
Asking for a friend.

125 gr. .357 mag. load is over 1400 also. It is a fire-breathing beast.
Lots of recoil but to an experienced shooter, controllable.
