.44 Magnum For Self Defense

I have a problem with his conclusions because of the large difference in sample sizes between persons shot with the .357 magnum and .44 magnum.

As Nadal Hussain proved. Get hit with anything isn’t going to improve your day. That being said, 44 magnum is an excellent defensive weapon. Their just not that much fun to pack around. As Garrett bullets proved that a 44 is capable extreme penetration. As always, it comes down to speed, power, bullet design. And both the 357 and 44 have more than enough for human predators.

I’ve linked to this before, but as it covers over 2,000 actual shootings, it deserves consideration:

If the intent is merely to deter, not kill or cripple, then any caliber works, even 0.22 LR. But if you must actually kill someone, then any of the big calibers works.

@bob sykes: Thanks for posting the Link. … Like most studies (disregarding all the disclaimers) the author seems to perceive more than the reader can divine. That said, it seems to validate that a 12ga. requires the least no. of trigger pulls (but the author offers no insight as to load or distance). … Then the surprise – put a projectile in the head and the threat is soon ended. Good luck defending that as “self defense”. … Best answer ? Quite possibly. One “strange noise” – “fireworks” or a “car ‘back firing'” (how many vehicles on the road still have carburetors ?) … Threat ended. Walk away, Mr. Grayman.
